SPARTANBURG, S.C. --- The Campbell women's basketball team earned its fourth win in its last five outings with a 56-41 victory on the road at USC Upstate Thursday night. Hannah Long led three Camel (5-3) double-figure scorers with a career-high 15 points to go with eight rebounds.
The Camels used a 10-0 run between the end of the first and the start of the second period to take its first double-digit lead of the game and held it for the remainder of the contest. MaKala Rouse scored 13 points on 6-of-11 shooting and added four rebounds, an assist and a steal. Summer Price chipped in 12 points including eight points in the first period.
Campbell built a game-high 17-point lead on three different occasions including midway through the third period. CU held Upstate (5-7) to a season-low .258 shooting from the field (16-for-61) and just a .095 clip from three-point range. (2-for-21). The Camels shot .490 from the floor (25-for-51) and out-rebounded the Spartans 44-33.
A layup by Rouse turned a 15-point halftime lead into a 38-21 advantage two minutes into the third period. It was still a 17-point advantage before Tamera Thorpe scored six-straight points to draw Upstate within 11 (41-32) with 3:32 on the clock. Rouse broke up the short run with a layup, but it was still an 11-point advantage going to the fourth after Riley Popplewell scored the third period's final points with two minutes left.
Four-straight Campbell points in the fourth was answered by a three pointer from Thorpe to make the score 48-36 with 7:29 left to play. The CU lead was 16 before Rylie Parkhurst connected on a three to cut the Camel advantage to 54-41 with 4:48 on the clock. Rouse hit a layup in the following possession to wrap-up the game's scoring. Neither side scored for the final 4:23 of the contest before Campbell picked up the win.
Thorpe led the Spartans with 12 points, six rebounds and two assists while Popplewell scored 10 points and tallied a block and a steal. Brianna Cribb led the Camels on the boards with a game-high nine rebounds, scored six points and assisted on three baskets. Caroline Bowns tallied seven points on 3-of-6 shooting while Hayley Barber drained her first career three pointer and pulled down a career-high eight rebounds.
The opening period featured five ties and two lead changes. Long hit a free throw to give CU its first lead of the contest early at 4-3 while a Bowns layup made it a 6-5 advantage midway through the first. Bowns knotted the game at 8-8 before four-straight points from Price made it a 12-8 advantage with 1:42 on the clock. It was a four-point Camel lead after the first (14-10) after Price scored the final six points of the opening frame.
Price's final jumper in the first kicked off the 10-0 run that gave the Camels a 22-10 lead with 6:49 left in the second period. Long had eight-straight points in the run before a Raven Jefferson bucket broke a five-minute Spartan scoring drought.
Thorpe cut the Campbell lead briefly to single digits before the Camels reeled off eight-straight points, capped off by a Bowns three, that made the score 30-13 with 3:15 on the clock. Upstate ended the first half on a 6-2 run over the final three minutes of the second to cut the Campbell lead to 32-19 at halftime.
Campbell will return to action with a pair of games in San Juan, Puerto Rico as a part of in the Puerto Rico Classico. It will be the second time in program history that the Camels will play outside the continental US. CU will face Arkansas Pine-Bluff on Monday, Dec. 19 and then take on Morgan State on Tuesday, Dec. 20.
