BUIES CREEK, N.C. --- Coming off one of its most successful regular seasons in program history, Campbell has accepted a bid to play in the Women's Basketball Invitational postseason tournament. The Camels will host St. Francis (Pa.) in a first round matchup at Gore Arena on Thursday at 7:00 p.m.
Campbell (21-9) matched its highest regular-season win total in program history with an eight-win turnaround from last season. CU finished second in the Big South Conference with a 13-5 record after being picked to finish eighth in the preseason coaches poll.
Campbell has had the top ranked scoring defense in NCAA DI for the past 12 weeks. The Camels, seeded second in last weekend's Big South Championship, were upset by eventual tournament champions UNC Asheville in the quarterfinal round.
"We are excited to be able to continue our season and we are honored that the Women's Basketball Invitational committee included us in their field!" Said Campbell head coach, and 2017 Big South Coach of the Year, Ronny Fisher. "We are facing a very tough St. Francis team in the first round and we are thankful for the opportunity to play again!"
It will be the Camels' first ever appearance in the WBI and the program's first postseason appearance since the 2000 NCAA Tournament. Thursday will also mark the first ever women's basketball postseason contest at Gore Arena.
The 2017 WBI will be the eighth edition of the event. The 16-team tournament will take place over two weeks with all games being played on campus sites. A single-elimination format, the WBI bracket is divided into two regions with eight seeded teams on each side.
Campbell will become the third team in the Big South to play in the WBI. Charleston Southern participated in the inaugural event in 2010 and again in 2012. Presbyterian played in the 2013 WBI under the direction of Fisher. The Buccaneers will also participate in this season's tournament.
St. Francis will enter the matchup with a 16-14 overall matchup and finished tied for second in the Northeast Conference with a 13-5 league mark. The Red Flash were defeated in the NEC Championship quarterfinals.
Campbell and St. Francis have only squared off once in each program's history. It was on New Year's Eve in 1994 when the Red Flash came away with the victory on their home court during a holiday tournament.
