Campbell Wins Edwin Watts/Palmetto Intercollegiate; Third-Straight Women's Golf Tourney Victory

KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. -- Campbell won its third-straight collegiate women's golf tournament Tuesday, with a three-stroke triumph at the College of Charleston Edwin Watts/Palmetto Intercollegiate at Oak Point.

The Lady Camels led after each of the three rounds in the 54-hole event, which was divided into two days of 27 holes each. Campbell finished the event at a school-record 882 strokes (298-290-294), topping the previous mark of 886 posted at the UNC Wilmington Lady Seahawk Invitational in March 2003.

The victory marked CU's third-straight in the fall season, following wins at the Stetson Hatter Fall Classic (Oct. 18-19) and the Georgia State John Kirk/Lady Panther Intercollegiate (Oct. 25-26).

John Crooks also registered his 48th collegiate coaching tournament victory with the Lady Camels. Now in his 14th year as women's head coach at CU, Crooks stands behind only Dan Brooks of Duke among active NCAA Division I coaches in all-time wins.

Campbell sophomore Alejandra Shaw shot a season-low 70 in the final round to finish in a tie for fifth place individually at one-over 217. Junior Sofia Gorelik tied for seventh at three-over 219, while sophomore Maite Ortiz de Pinedo tied for 14th at 223. Freshman Camila Lopez also carded a season-low one-under 71 in Tuesday's final round.

The Lady Camels defeated second-place Michigan by three strokes and third-place Southern Methodist by six shots in the 18-team field that included a pair of top-30 teams.

The last time Campbell did not win a tournament was the Shoot-out at the Legends, Oct. 4-5, at Franklin, Ind. Notre Dame (which finished sixth on Tuesday in the Palmetto event) won that tournament in 901 strokes, followed by Michigan (913) and Campbell (914).

On Tuesday, Adrienne Millican of East Carolina won individual honors at three-under 213 (70-71-72). Merynn Ito of Nebraska was second (215).
