ELON, N.C. --- A 7-0 Elon run to start the game proved to be the difference as the Phoenix claimed a 15-5 victory over the Campbell in both team's opening contest of the 2017 season. Sarah Paul led the Camels with a pair of goals.
Melissa Placek registered a goal and an assist while Sami Smit and Tina Ricci also found the back of the cage for Campbell (0-1), who was opening its fifth season in program history. Stephanie Asher led Elon (1-0) with five goals and Sloan Kessler scored three times. Shannon Horan was one of seven Phoenix players to score once while she had three assists for a total of four points.
Horan scored the game's first goal just 22 seconds into the contest. Asher struck for the next two scores in the next two minutes of action before four different goal scorers gave the Pheonix a 7-0 lead with 12:03 to play in the first half. Paul registered the Camels' first goal of the season at the 9:50 mark on a free-position attempt.
Following another Elon goal, Paul struck again on a free-position attempt before Smit scored with 6:46 on the clock to cut the deficit to 8-3. The score was 9-4 at halftime after Placek scored on a free-position attempt with 1:46 to play before halftime.
Elon reeled off five-straight goals to open the second half to take a commanding 14-4 lead with 5:57 left to play. Asher and Kessler each had a pair of scores during the stretch. Ricci scored her first career intercollegiate goal with 2:51 left on the clock off an assist from Placek before the Phoenix closed out the scoring 30 seconds later.
Saturday's game was the first contest in both program's histories to be contested with the new 90 second shot clock. Rachel Ramirez earned the win in goal with 10 saves while Merredith Bechler took the loss despite 13 stops.
Sam Carey led the Camels on the draw with four draw controls in her first game in the orange and black. Paul had a team-high seven shots but overall Elon out-shot Campbell 35-20. Kayla Reilly, April Reinhart and Amanda Chasin each had two ground balls for the Camels.
Campbell will return to action on Saturday, Feb. 18 for its home opener at Barker-Lane Stadium against Old Dominion. First draw is set for noon.
