Camels take down Wildcats 9-8 Sunday


DAVIDSON, N.C. – Campbell scored three unanswered goals in the final ten minutes of play to earn a 9-8 victory over Davidson Sunday afternoon at Richardson Stadium.

Sam Carey scored the equalizer with 10:39 left in the second and Melissa Placek clinched the win with her second goal of the day with 52 seconds remaining.

Davidson (2-3) took a one-goal lead in the second half at 7-6 with 15:10 remaining. Carey tallied her second of the game at the 10:39 mark to spark a three-goal rally, which led to a two-goal lead. Davidson scored with 29 seconds left to pull within one, but Campbell won the ensuing draw control and held for the win.

The Camels (2-4) lead by two in the first half after scoring three-straight to take a 3-1 lead. Davidson closed the half on a 4-2 run to draw even at the half, 5-5.

Mackenzie Koeller, Placek, and Carey tallied two goals apiece to lead the Campbell offensive attack. Davidson duo Nicole Pettiglio and Chrstine Molinari also found the back of the cage twice.

Both teams completed 17-of-19 clear attempts in the contest. Davidson edged Campbell in shots, 22-21 as the Camels had the advantage in draw controls, 10-8.

Merredith Bechler (1-4) picked up her first win of the season, tallying six saves for CU. Rose Woolson (2-3) took the loss in goal for the Wildcats.

It was the Camels' second-straight one-goal victory to improv to 2-0 on their spring break trip after a 14-13 win over La Salle on Friday. 

Campbell returns home for a five-game homestand beginning Friday, March 17 against Mercer at 5 p.m. and Sunday March 19 against Richmond at 2 p.m.
