The Citadel defeats Wrestling 49-6 Friday

CHARLESTON, S.C. - The Citadel won nine of ten individual matches and defeated the Campbell wrestling team 49-6 Friday night inside Deas Hall.

The Citadel improved to 6-8 on the season, while Campbell fell to 1-12.

The Bulldogs earned six pins, two technical falls, and a decision to oust the Camels', whose lone victory came at heavyweight when Parker Burns pinned The Citadel's Scott Edelson in 4:35.

The pin was Burns' third of the season, and he improved to 7-6 in dual competition for the Camels.

Campbell returns to action tomorrow as they take on North Carolina State at 4 p.m. and Ohio at 5:30 p.m. in Raleigh.

N.C. State (6-4) enters this weekend after dropping its ACC opener 26-12 to Virginia last Saturday. At 157 pounds, Colton Palmer owns a team-best 22-8 record for the Wolfpack, and Darius Little is 19-6 at the 141-pound spot. At 149 pounds, Darrion Caldwell is the top-ranked wrestler nationally in his weight class, according to Intermat's rankings.

NCSU defeated Campbell 29-7 in a dual also held in Raleigh on Jan. 8.

"I think we showed a high-level of effort and desire to win in that match and that our guys were motivated to compete hard," said Boardwine. "There were some very close losses in individual matches there, and we look forward to another chance to win some of those matches."

Ohio (4-3) is coming off a 30-11 win at Northern Illinois last Friday. The Bobcats also have wins over Millersville, Lock Haven, and Appalachian State this year.

"Ohio has a great tradition and a very solid MAC team this season," said Boardwine. "Ohio is a great team to have on our schedule, both this year and hopefully in future years. "The more often our guys can see tough, hard-nosed athletes from top programs who wrestle a physical style and at a high pace, the better chance they have to learn from it. I want to see us win some individual matches against them now and start challenging them as a team in the very near future."
