Three Camels earn top finishes at Journeymen Tussle

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. - Campbell wrestling took home a trio of first place finishes en route to a strong showing at the 2016 Journeymen Tussle hosted by Hofstra University Sunday.

Nathan Kraisser, Joshua Heil, and Austin Kraisser all earned top finishes in their weight classes. Benjamin Barton, Quentin Perez, Ville Heino, and Jere Heino claimed second place finishes on the day. Willie Bivens III and Alex Herringshaw earned third place finishes and Paul Ambrose claimed fourth. 

At the 125-pound weight class, N. Kraisser earned the top spot after finishing a perfect 4-0 on the day. He knocked off Jacob Martin of Hofstra via tech fall at 5:37, 16-1. He knocked off Brandon Paetzell, 7-1, and Michael Russo, 10-3. In the championship round, Kraisser took a 4-0 decision against Sean McCabe of Rutgers.

Heil earned first place in the 141-pound class, completing the day 5-0. He knocked off Robbie Rizzolino of NC State, 3-2. He continued with a 7-3 win over Charles Banaszak of Brown, then a 7-1 win against Doug Gudenburr of The Citadel. He finished the day with an 8-0 victory over Patrick Munn of Penn. Heil improved to 6-7 on the year with his undefeated day. 

Austin Kraisser finished with a record of 3-0 on the afternoon to take home first place at the 157-pound bracket. His day started with a 4-0 victory against Willy McDonald of Brown. He continued with a 12-4 victory over Brown's Matthew Lattanze and finished his day with a 15-3 win over Jake Kaminsky of Hofstra. 

Perez went 2-1 on the day in the 165-pound class, including a 16-1 tech fall victory at 2:12 in his third match of day against Jason Carr of The Citadel. He also knocked off Bobby Fehr of Hofstra, 8-0. 

Barton also completed a 2-1 record on the day, taking a runner-up finish at 149-pounds. He earned a 9-6 win over Jon Errico of Penn. He fell to Joe Oliva of Penn 6-2, but secured second with a 9-4 win over Connor Mull of Hofstra. 

V. Heino started his afternoon with a 18-3 tech fall win against Chandler Sambets of The Citadel. He improved his day with a 12-3 victory over Mike Oxley of Hofstra and a 5-2 win against Nicky Hall of NC State. He dropped the first place match by fall to Michael Macchiavello of NC State. 

J. Heino took a 13-2 victory over Brown's Ian Butterbrodt, at 285-pounds. He followed that with a 10-4 win over Marc McDonald of Rutgers, then advanced to the first place match with a 4-2 win against The Citadel's Joe Bexley. He dropped a tight 3-1 decision to Mike Boykin of NC State in the first place match. 

Bivens dropped his opening match at 197-pounds to Tyler Johnson of NC State, 10-8, but bounced back to earn a 15-13 win against Tucker Ziegler of Brown. He capped off his day with a 16-3 third place victory against Josh Durso-Finley of Brown. 

Also claiming third was Herringshaw at 174-pounds. He opened the day with a loss against Nick Reenan of NC State. He bounced back with an 8-1 win over Brian Krasowski of Penn and a 7-2 victory against Galloway Thurston of Brown. 

Campbell claimed 11 bonus point victories on the afternoon, one more than total losses on day, 10. 

The Camels surge into Southern Conference action, Dec. 14 against Appalachian State. Last season, Campbell dropped a 28-12 decision to the Mountaineers at home.
