Wrestling begins 2017 at Southern Scuffle Jan 1-2

BUIES CREEK, N.C. - After an extended break, Campbell wrestling is set to take on the 2017 Southern Scuffle presented by Compound Clothing. The two-day event is hosted by UT-Chattanooga in Chattanooga, Tenn. The event is set to begin at 10 a.m. on both days of competition. 

Last time out, Campbell opened up Southern Conference action, Dec. 14, with a 24-13 loss at Appalachian State. The Camels earned wins from Joshua Heil (141), Austin Kraisser (157), Quentin Perez (165), and Ville Heino (184). 

At the 2016 Southern Scuffle, Campbell recorded its highest team finish in school history, 14th place, as it collected 38.5 team points during the two-day tournament. Nathan Kraisser finished fourth in the 133-pound weight class for Campbell. N.Kraisser finished 6-2 overall and dropped the third place match to UVA's George DiCamillo. 

Eight ranked teams will compete at this year's event, including five top-10 programs. No. 1 Oklahoma State, No. 6 Missouri, No. 7 Cornell, No. 9 Lehigh, and No. 10 Minnesota will be represented. Other ranked teams include No. 15 Stanford, No. 18 Northern Iowa, and No. 19 Penn. The rest of the field includes Air Force, Chattanooga, The Citadel, Cleveland State, Duke, Edinboro, Gardner-Webb, Navy, North Carolina, Northern Colorado, Penn and Utah Valley.

There will be more than 60 ranked participants, including N.Kraisser who is ranked 14th in the 125-pound weight class. There are three top-ranked participants at this year's Scuffle, per the Asics FloRankings, including older brother of Campbell's Joshua HeilDean Heil (141) of Oklahoma State. The other two top-ranked participants are Cornell's Gabe Dean (184) and Missouri's J'Den Cox (197).

Following the 2017 Southern Scuffle, Campbell will return to Chattanooga for a SoCon dual against the Mocs, Jan. 8 at 2 p.m.
