Camels knock off Kent State Friday afternoon at Virginia Duals

HAMPTON, VA. - After dropping its two group duals to Bucknell and Arizona State, Campbell took down Kent State Friday afternoon to advance in the Bronze bracket of the 2017 Virginia Duals.

With the 26-16 victory against Kent State, Campbell will take on Old Dominion Saturday at 10 a.m. in the conclusion of the Bronze bracket. Campbell fell 23-15 to Bucknell to open the morning and lost a tight matchup to Arizona State, 23-20.

Campbell 15, Bucknell 23

N. Kraisser, Benjamin Barton, V. Heino, and Jere Heino all took wins during the opening match of the 2017 Virginia Duals. Campbell fell to Bucknell in the dual, 23-15.

N. Kraisser began the morning for Campbell with a 16-1 technical fall over Jordan Gessner at the 125-pound matchup. At 149-pounds, Barton knocked off David Kelly via an 18-6 major decision, drawing Campbell within one, 10-9.

V. Heino took a victory at the 184-pound matchup as he knocked off Garrett Hoffman, 11-5. J. Heino closed the match on a positive note for CU as he collected an 8-2 win against Tyler Greene at the 285-pound bout.

Campbell 20, Arizona State 23

N. Kraisser, Jonathan Ryan, V. Heino, and Willie Bivens III picked up victories for Campbell, but CU dropped a tight result to Arizona State in the second dual of the day.

Opening at 125-pounds, N. Kraisser made quick work of Josh Kramer, earning a fall victory 16 seconds into the first round, which put CU ahead 6-0. In the following contest, Ryan earned a major decision victory over Ted Rico, 13-5, giving Campbell a 10-0 lead early on.

ASU picked up 21 consecutive points through the 174-pound match, but V. Heino earned a 12-4 major decision over Conner Small to pull Campbell within seven, 21-14. At the 197-pound matchup, Bivens collected a fall win over Austyn Harris, combined with ASU losing one point, the dual was tied at 20-20 with one match remaining. In the 285-pound matchup, Jere Heino fell 1-0 to no. 4 Tanner Hall, which gave ASU the slim victory.

Campbell 26, Kent State 16

Six wrestlers earned individual victories in the final dual of the day against Kent State. N. Kraisser knocked off Cory Simpson by fall to cap off a perfect 3-0 day. Ryan, Barton, John Weiss, V. Heino, and J. Heino also picked up victories for the Camels.

After N. Kraisser's win put Campbell ahead 6-0, Ryan took down Ethan McCoy 11-10 at the 133-pound contest to put CU ahead 9-0. After a close loss at 141, Barton won via fall over Tim Rooney at 149-pounds to give Campbell a 15-3 lead.

Following a tech fall loss at 157-pounds, Weiss, in the 165-pound contest, earned a 9-2 victory over Jarrett Walker to push the Campbell lead back to double digits at 18-8. With the lead cut to seven, V. Heino knocked off Jerald Spohn by technical fall, 16-1, at the 184-pound matchup, to finish 3-0 on the day. J. Heino closed the day with a 7-2 victory at 285-pound matchup over Devin Nye to clinch the 26-16 win.
