WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Ashley Hartert converted a penalty kick for the Fighting Camels Friday night as Campbell fell to No. 15 Wake Forest 6-1 in an exhibition match that was formatted with three 30-minute periods.
"We were very pleased with our freshman response and our young players' progress," head coach Todd Clark said. "We have to keep working our way through injuries, but those setbacks give an opportunity for the younger players to get experience in the games."
Hartert scored in the 17th minute of the third period. The game served as the final preseason tune-up for the Camels in 2013.
"We told our kids there's a reason you play a team like Wake Forest. They'll teach lessons that no matter how much a coach talks, we can't replicate it on the practice field. If we learned a lesson it will be worth it. We need a challenge because we are young."
The Camels' regular season kicks off Fri., Aug. 23 against Marshall at 7:30 p.m. in Huntington, W. Va. CU will play three games on the road before its first home match Sept. 5 as it hosts Mt. Olive at 7:00 p.m. at Eakes Athletic Complex.
