UNC Asheville takes Big South opener from Campbell 1-0

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – Campbell fell to UNC Asheville 1-0 in its Big South opener Thursday at Greenwood Field. The Camels fall to 4-4 (0-1 Big South) as the Bulldogs improve to 5-4 (1-0 Big South) in a game originally scheduled for Wednesday but was postponed due to rain.

"After dominating the match, we gave up yet another soft goal because we chose to step in and poke a ball away rather than tackle," head coach Todd Clark said after the match.  "We had multiple exceptional free kick opportunities, but misplayed several and generally just didn't do enough to win. Until we live and die by every play and decision, we are beatable."

The Camels outshot the Bulldogs 18-11 with nine shots on goal but were unable to convert a score in their third-straight loss.

Asheville netted the only goal of the game in the 54th minute, as a Bulldog misplayed the ball in the box, but Amanda Knapp was able to collect it and put it past keeper Samantha Lawson.

Lawson, who earned her first career start, stopped five Bulldog shots, bringing her season total to nine. Kellsey Costello-Mays led the Campbell offense with six shots, four on goal, while Kine Thorsvik was able to place two on frame.

The Camels have a quick turnaround, as they travel to Liberty Saturday for a 1:00 p.m. kickoff for their second Big South game of the season.
