Early goal gives Gardner-Webb 1-0 win over Campbell

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Gardner-Webb notched its first Big South win of the season, defeating Campbell 1-0 at Eakes Athletic Complex Saturday. Despite outshooting the Bulldogs 9-8, the Camels fell to 4-6-0 overall and 0-4-0 in the league while Gardner-Webb moved to 3-8-1 overall and 1-3-0 Big South.

GWU got on the board early and held the 1-0 lead for the rest of the game. In the seventh minute, Shelby Hooe took a shot inside the Campbell box that CU keeper Alexis Connors stretched to block. Samantha Gutierrez came through to the six-yard box to one-time the rebound into the back of the net.

The Camels put three shots on the frame, but GWU keeper Amy Schmitt was able save them all. Connors earned four saves on the day as the Bulldogs had five shots on-goal.

Campbell is back in action Wednesday as it hosts Charleston Southern for a 7:00 p.m. kickoff at Eakes Athletic Complex.
