Chernaya and Sutton Named to All-Conference First Team; Johnson Named Coach of the Year
Sutton was named to the all-conference team for the second consecutive season. She is the first Camel to win back to back first team honors since Jiri Beranek in 2004 and 2005.
The Kelsall, England native finished the regular season with a 20-8 overall singles record, 15-5 in dual play, and 8-2 in A-Sun play. She also compiled a 23-7 overall doubles record with teammates Dominek Wallaart and Borislava Nikolova.
"Lisa brings a lot to the table and I couldn't be happier for her," said Coach Johnson. "The award is a credit to all her hard work she's put in. She brings a lot of energy and a lot of enthusiasm to our team, and works hard and wins with determination. She is a great leader and will be greatly missed next season."
Chernaya earned all-conference honors and freshman of the year honors by compiling an 18-2 overall singles record, and a 10-0 record in A-Sun play. The Islamabad, Pakistan native is also 14-3 in doubles play with Nikolova.
Chernaya is the first ever Camel to win freshman of the year honors. She is also the first Campbell player to ever be named to the all-conference team and all-freshman team in the same season.
"I'm very proud of Karolina for winning this award," said Johnson. "She came in January so she had to transition a lot of things to adjust to the college and American lifestyle. She was 10-0 in conference and her play with Lisa and Borislava at 1, 2, and 3 was the foundation for our success."
The coach of the year award was the second for Johnson with the first coming back in 2001. His career record is 188-97 in 13 seasons as head coach. He has only had one loosing season in thirteen years, and has guided Campbell to six consecutive double digit wins seasons.
The Camels (13-7, 8-2 A-Sun) earned the two seed and a first round bye in next weekends A-Sun Championships in Deland Fla. They will face the winner of the UNF / Jacksonville quarterfinal match on Friday.
