WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Senior Karolina Chernaya (Tashkent, Uzbekistan) posted three victories before falling in the finals of Flight A Singles to Bree Moniz-Soares (Davidson), 6-4, 6-4, on Sunday at the Wake Forest Fall Invite. Flight B Singles saw freshman Nell Gaigher (Cape Town, South Africa) and junior Tamara Stanic (Budva, Montenegro) tie for fifth.

Notching straight-set wins over opponents from Elon and Winthrop helped Chernaya advance to the semifinals. She topped Kimmy Cuerin from host Wake Forest, 6-7 (4), 7-5, 6-0, to move onto the Flight A finals.

Both Gaigher and Stanic notched consolation wins in Flight B to finish in a tie for fifth after falling in the quarterfinals in three sets.

Rebounding with a consolation win in Flight C and D singles were sophomore Ana Maria Ortiz (Betera, Spain) and sophomore Ewa Telenga (Gilwice, Poland). Ortiz defeated Katya Salas of Richmond, 7-6 (3), 6-7 (7), 6-0, in a hard-fought match.

All three doubles tandems picked up victory and advanced to the quarterfinals before having their first setback. Stanic and senior Natasha Afridi (Tokyo, Japan) tied for fifth in Flight A, while Chernaya/Gaigher also competed in the same flight. A 10-2 tiebreaker helped lift Ortiz/Telenga in the opening match of Flight B doubles.

The three-day event at the Wake Forest Tennis Complex featured individuals from Elon, Wake Forest, Maryland, Richmond, East Tennessee St., UNCG, Davidson, Charlotte, Appalachian State, Winthrop and Elon.

Campbell concludes the fall schedule on Oct. 20 at the ITA Regional in Chapel Hill, N.C.
