Tamara Stanic earns Big South weekly honor

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – On the strength of a pair of singles and doubles victories, Tamara Stanic of Campbell University has been named Choice Hotels Big South Conference women's tennis player of the week.

A junior from Budva, Montenegro, Stanic improved to 10-1 on the year without losing a set in two singles victories last week.  She won in straight sets at the top singles position in a sweep of Savannah State.  One day later, she downed Gardner-Webb's Ronia Hutterli at the third position.

Stanic also moved to 8-3 in doubles play while extending her win streak with partner Natasha Afridi to four matches.  She has not lost a set in Big South singles play this year.

Campbell opened a 6-match home stand last Saturday with a 6-1 victory over Gardner-Webb to improve to 7-5 overall, 1-1 in Big South Conference play.  CU hosts Big South rivals Charleston Southern (7-3, 2-0) Thursday (2 p.m.) and Longwood (2-3, 1-1) on Saturday (1 p.m.) this week.

The Camels own a 4-1 record at home this year, the only loss coming against UNC Wilmington on Feb. 25.

"This honor is certainly well-deserved," said Campbell head coach David Johnson "Tamara has the best record on the team and her only loss came in a third-set tiebreaker.  She has accounted herself very well and has won some 3-set matches, overcome deficits, and provided leadership and stability for us.  As we enter the conference season we certainly hope she can sustain it for her benefit and certainly for the team's."

Stanic's selection marks the second time this year a Camel has been named women's tennis player of the week.  Karolina Chernaya won the award Jan. 21.
