Camels wrap up conference play with close loss to Liberty, 4-3

BUIES CREEK, N.C. -- The Fighting Camels fell in a close match to the Liberty Flames, 4-3, to close out regular season conference play. After taking the doubles point, Campbell dropped four of six singles matches in the loss.

Campbell (8-11, 3-5 BSC) split doubles matches on courts two and three to begin the match. Pauline Roustan and Lea Cutura fell at No. 2 doubles to Hassey/Groeneveld, 6-1, for the duo's second-straight loss. Campbell juniors Nina Asanin and Georgina Segarra responded with a win on court three, 6-2, over Camacho/Brown.

The doubles point came down to court one, where Alexandra Andrivot and Isabel Boada claimed a win in epic fashion, 7-5. Trailing 5-4, the duo overcame three-straight 40-15 deficits to earn their ninth win of the season and clinch the doubles point for Campbell.

Liberty (9-11, 6-1 BSC) would not go down without a fight as the Flames earned four singles wins to capture the overall victory. Roustan fell to Camacho on court five, 6-2, 6-1, to tie the match at 1-1. Asanin earned Campbell's first singles win of the day with a score of 6-1, 6-3 over Brown. The Flames picked up wins on courts four and three over Boada and Alexandra Nicoara, giving Liberty a 3-2 lead that would not be relinquished.

The match was clinched on court one as Andrivot fell to Anderson in three sets, 3-6, 6-4, 6-0. Cutura earned the final win of the day in a third tiebreaker set, 7-5, 2-6, 10-8.

Up next, the Camels will face a quick turnaround as the South Carolina State Bulldogs visit Buies Creek. The Campbell men and women will take on SCSU beginning at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, April 12 at the James R. Nisbet Tennis Center.
