BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Campbell started strong by taking the first two sets, 25-10, 25-11, before the alumni team found a groove and split the final two frames, 25-22, 24-26 on Saturday at Gore Arena/John W. Pope Jr. Convocation Center. The exhibition match wrapped up the preseason schedule for the Camels as former student-athletes were welcomed back to campus to meet first-year head coach Greg Goral.
Sophomore outside Alexis Hein (Murrieta, Calif.), a transfer from Arkansas-Little Rock, led the Camels with a double-double - 11 kills and 12 digs. Classmate Katelyn Layden (Chapel Hill, N.C.) also had an impressive all-around match with nine kills and nine digs, while a .357 attacking pct. with seven kills was compiled by junior middle blocker Lorin Thomas (Raleigh, N.C.).
Both setters saw action for the Camels as senior Heather Wilson (Concord, N.C.) notched 17 assists in the first two frames before freshman Rebecca Ramirez (Long Beach, Calif.) came in and added a match-high 22 assists.
A transfer from Cincinnati in sophomore libero Mary Crema (Loveland, Ohio) dug up 21 attacks to lead the contest. The third Camel to hit double figures in digs was sophomore defensive specialist Lauren Bewick (Winterville, N.C.) with 10.
The alumni were paced by a pair of double-doubles from Emily Werner (2007-2010) with 11 kills and 13 digs and Sarah Dillon with 14 assists and 10 digs. Caroline Hammersly (2007-10) also contributed 14 assists.
A match-high total of 71 digs were recorded by the alumni with Kelsey Campbell (2010-11) totaling a team-best 17. Eight digs each were tallied by Sarah Hill (2003-04) and Lauren Garza (2008-11).
Each team came away with 12 blocks as senior middle blocker Lindsey Coats (Dunn, N.C.) registered six including three solo for Campbell, while assistant coach Ashley Weers (2006-09) also totaled six for the alumni.
A strength for the Camels were the 15 aces recorded, paced by Layden and Coats with four each.
In the first two frames, Campbell controlled the pace by converting sideouts on 17-of-22 opportunities. The final two sets enabled for coach Goral to mix and match his rotations as freshman Jenny Tait (Ormiston, Australia) and Ramirez and sophomore Kendall Tart (Dunn, N.C.) saw increased action.
As the match progressed, the alumni gained confidence and used a 11-3 run to take a 21-20 advantage on consecutive kills by Werner in the third frame. The Camels fought back to score five of the next six points to take the set, 25-22.
The fourth frame was the most competitive as the teams traded the lead six times and were tied on 11 occassions. Werner again came up big for the alumni with a kill to end the set with a 26-24 triumph.
The alumni team consisted of Kelsey Campbell (2010-2011), Sarah Dillon (2002-2006), Sarah Hill (2003-2004), Emily Werner (2007-10), Tabitha Turner (2003-06), Brittany (Rusin) Cabaleiro (2003-06), Ashley Weers (2006-09), Caroline Hammersly (2007-10), Rachel Templin (2003-06), Lauren Garza (2008-11) and Katie Stallings (2005-08).
