Blue Devils Hand Campbell Seventh
Straight Defeat
DURHAM, N.C. - The Duke
University wrestling team improved to 9-7 on the season with a 29-6
win over Campbell on Wednesday, February 12. The Blue Devils have
now won three consecutive bouts and eight of their last nine dual
meets. The Camels fall to 4-14 in dual matches.
Senior Tom Cass (Las Vegas, Nev.) scored an 11-3 victory in the
night's opening match to spot the Blue Devils to a 4-0 lead. Cass
scored a late takedown in the third period and used an inside
cradle to collect two back points for the major decision win. The
win for Cass was his 18th of the season and improved his career
record to 88-36.
At 197-pounds, Andrew Herbert (San Francisco, Calif.) posted
a 4-2 decision over Campbell's Josh McConnell to increase the Blue
Devil lead to 7-0. Duke extended its lead to 10-0 with a Roy
Williams (Hopewell, N.J.) win in the heavyweight division. Williams
used a big throw and back points in the opening stanza and held on
for a 7-4 decision, securing his third win of the season.
In one of the top matches of the evening, Tommy Hoang
(Cushing, Okla.) and Campbell's Andy Bricker scored off at
125-pounds. Bricker jumped out with a two-point takedown in the
opening minute, but Hoang countered with an escape and takedown to
hold a 3-2 advantage at the end of one period. After Bricker
knotted the contest at 3-3 in the second period, Hoang collected an
escape early in the third and held on for a 4-3 decision. Hoang
extended his win streak to 11 matches, while Bricker fell to 18-7
on the season.
At 133-pounds, Andy Soliman (Prosser, Wash.) stretched Duke's
lead to 16-0 with his sixth win of the season. Soliman jumped out
to an early 4-1 lead and held on for an 8-7 decision. Campbell
narrowed the gap to 16-3 with Adam Bricker picking up a 10-3
decision at 141-pounds. The win improved Bricker's record to 17-6
on the year.
Freshman Brandon Foose (Boyertown, Pa.) registered a win by
fall in 4:49 at 149-pounds to extend Duke's lead to 22-3. The pin
was Foose's team-high fourth of the season and improved his record
to 8-20 on the season. Campbell's Vic Arena scored a 4-2 decision
at 157-pounds to trim the Blue Devil lead to 22-6 with two matches
remaining.
Duke's Michael Mitchell (Midwest City, Okla.) earned his 27th
win of the season with a domination performance against Adam Rees.
The Blue Devil junior held a 4-1 lead with 1:34 of riding time
after the opening period and extended his advantage to 7-1 with
3:09 of riding time through two periods. In the final two minutes,
Mitchell continue to pour it on finishing with a 12-2 major
decision victory to advance the Duke lead to 26-6.
In the final match, Tim Marcantonio (Berkeley Heights, N.J.)
collected his 12th win of the season with a 5-3 decision over Jon
Carlisle. Duke ended the night with a 29-6 victory as eight of the
ten Blue Devil grapplers posted wins.
The Fighting Camels return home to take on Davidson, Saturday
at 2:00 p.m. Duke returns to action on Saturday, February 15 when
it travels to Virginia for matches with James Madison and Virginia.
The Blue Devils face James Madison at 1:00 p.m. before taking on
the Cavaliers in an ACC battle at 7:00 p.m.
