Jeremiah
Fennell Signs Athletics Grant-in-Aid with
Campbell Wrestling
BUIES CREEK, N.C. Jeremiah
Fennell of Sandusky, Ohio, has signed an Athletics Grant-in-Aid
with Campbell as announced by head wrestling coach Billy Greene
today.
Fennell, a Sandusky
Perkins High School graduate, compiled a 72-45 record with 45 pins
and 172 take downs as a four-year letter winner at Perkins. As a
senior, Fennell went 43-10 and placed seventh in the state of Ohio.
In addition, he finished in the top 16 at senior nationals (4-2)
during his senior campaign.
"I foresee Jeremiah's
best competitive wrestling years being ahead of him," said Coach
Greene. "This is not said to minimize the great strides he has made
as high school wrestler. However, with a seventh place finish in
the competitive state of Ohio and a top 16 finish nationally as a
senior, Jeremiah will only continue to improve."
Fennell led the Pirates
with 23 falls, 89 takedowns and posted first place finishes at the
Findlay Duals (5-0), the Tiffin Wendy's Holiday Invite and the
OHSAA Sectionals. Fennell also finished second at the OHSAA
Districts, the Delaware Hayes Invite and the Sandusky Bay
Conference Tournament.
"From a technical
standpoint, Jeremiah is a powerful and agile heavyweight with his
strongest position being his feet," added Greene. "He understands
the importance of setting up his shots effectively and finishing
quickly, a critical element of success at this level. Moreover,
Jeremiah is very capable of generating a quick stand-up, another
key factor as high school wrestlers transition into collegiate
competition and are introduced to the riding time
factor."
As a junior, Fennell
went 15-1 with 35 takedowns and 10 falls. In his first two seasons
at Perkins, he totaled 14 victories and 25 takedowns.
Fennell's athletic
ability was not limited to the mat in high school as he was a
standout defensive lineman for the Pirates.
Fennell will wrestle in
the 285-pound weight class and will major in criminal justice at
Campbell. In high school, he was involved in pre-Criminal Justice
vocational coursework while at Perkins.
"Jeremiah is an
outstanding respectful young man with a great personality. It has
been a real pleasure recruiting him for our wrestling program. He
exemplifies the student-athlete type we are seeking to rebuild
Campbell wrestling for the upcoming years."
The Campbell
wrestling program finished the 2004-05 season 2-17 overall and 1-7
in the CAA. CU's wrestling program is under the direction of second
year head coach Billy Greene, a 2000 graduate of
Campbell.
