BUIES CREEK, N.C. - Campbell
held a one point lead going into the last match of the night, but
Davidson's Trebor Clavette scored a 9-3 decision over Brent Poynter
to give the Wildcats (6-10, 0-5 SoCon) a 25-23 victory over the
Camels (2-16-1, 1-5 CAA) on Senior Night at Carter Gymnasium.
After a Steve Wiktorek forfeit victory at 157 lbs. gave the Camels
their first lead of the evening at 23-22, Poynter and Clavette
squared off at 165 lbs. with the dual at stake. Clavette scored two
takedowns in the first period, never letting Poynter close, in
earning the match and dual victory for Davidson.
Poynter and Caleb Lesnoff were recognized before the dual as the
only two seniors on Campbell's roster. Lesnoff is the lone
four-year grappler for the Camels this season while Poynter is in
his second year after being named team MVP last season.
Richie Apolinar nabbed his fourth straight victory at 125 lbs. in
dramatic fashion. Leading 6-4 with less than five seconds, Altman
gained control of Apolinar and recorded a two-point near fall at
the buzzer to send the match to overtime. Apolinar came back quick
scoring a takedown 13 seconds into the extra session, to earn the
8-6 decision.
David Wise and Chris Mazzatta turned in solid performances as they
both won their second matches of the homestand. Wise earned a 15-0,
tech fall victory over Chris Panfili in the 133 lbs. match while
Mazzatta earned a 7-1 decision over Scott Matthews two matches
later at 149 lbs.
Marcus Boyd continued his solid season, winning his
23rd match of the year by earning a 24-8, tech fall
victory over Nick Amato in the 174 lbs. match.
Campbell has two duals this weekend; Friday at Duquesne and
Saturday at James Madison. Start times are at 7:00 and 4:00
respectively.
