GREENSBORO, N.C.-After day one of the
Southern Scuffle, hosted by UNC Greensboro, Campbell wrestling sits
in a five-way tie for 21st in the 29 team tourney.
The Fighting Camels have
three wrestlers still alive in the tourney, with junior CJ Gittens,
sophomore Jake Fose and senior Kyle Higgins advancing to day
two.
Gittens went 1-1 on the day
at 125, moving on to face No. 10 Jarrod Garnett from Virginia Tech.
Garnett finished day one at 2-1, including a pin of Ryan Dowd from
Boston University. Gittens, meanwhile, defeated Franklin and
Marshall's Steve Sabreen 5-1 in the opening round at
125.
Fose, at 157, also finished
the opening day with a record of 1-1, moving on to face North
Carolina's Thomas Ferguson. Fose downed Missouri's Giorgio Gregoris
before falling in a 7-1 decision to Virginia's No. 20 Jedd
Moore.
Higgins was the final Camels
to advance, also grabbing a 1-1 mark. The 184 pounder defeated Old
Dominion's Chase Ennis 4-2. Sophomore Ryan Ham also took one win at
174, defeating East Stroudsburg's Nick Tetro before being
eliminated from contention.
Campbell finished the day with 13.5
team points, while Kent State and Virginia Tech sit on top with 41
points a piece. Missouri, currently ranked at No. 5 on the USA
Today/Intermat/NWCA Division I poll, and Boise State, ranked at No.
14 in the nation, sit tied for 29th.
The remaining Camels will
begin at 9 a.m. tomorrow inside the Greensboro Coliseum Special Events Center.
