Wrestling Drops Three at Campbell Duals

BUIES CREEK, N.C.-Freshman Jake Fose and senior Rob Yoder went 2-1 on the day to lead Campbell, but the Camel grapplers dropped dual matches to UNC Pembroke 27-9, Belmont Abbey 30-13 and Duke 35-3 on Saturday, hosting the Campbell Duals.

"I think that a lot of our struggles can be contributed to being banged up," said Campbell head coach Billy Greene. "We were expecting things to be tough."

Campbell falls to 2-18-1 on the year, while Duke moves to 9-7, Belmont Abbey goes to 10-8-1 and UNC Pembroke moves to 6-11. Freshmen accounted for four out of the eight individual wins for CU, with one win by a sophomore and two by a senior.

"CJ Gittens did have a good day and was there to battle every time," added Greene. "He stays after it win or lose, and that's what I like about him. Jake Fose continues to get better and better as does Rob Yoder. All of those guys were in there today, and wrestling hard."

In match one, the Fighting Camels faced off with UNC Pembroke, falling behind 10-0 to start the contest before a pair of Campbell freshmen, Bob Matthews and Jake Fose nabbed decisions. The Braves, meanwhile, took the next four matches to gain a 27-6 advantage. Senior Rob Yoder earned a 7-4 win over junior heavyweight Eric Stancil, but CU took the loss, 27-9.

The second round matched the Fighting Camels with Belmont Abbey. Sophomore 125 pounder CJ Gittens started the bout with a 4-2 decision, but UNCP earned a pin at 133, gaining a 6-3 lead. Kelin Bidelspach, a 141 pound sophomore from Hanover, Pa., grabbed his team-leading 20th victory of the year, taking the 4-2 decision over the Crusaders' Kevin James, tying the team score at six. Fose picked up the next win for CU, earning a major decision over Abbey's Nick Rees, 14-4. Campbell would earn only three more points in the bout, with Yoder notching his second win of the day at heavyweight. The Crusaders ended the match with a 30-13 advantage.

Campbell and Duke paired up in the final match of the day. The Blue Devils owned all but one bout in the match, as Parker Burns, another freshman, nabbed an 8-3 win over Robert Halbrook. Duke took the match 35-3, winning its third contest of the day.

"Hopefully we can get a little healthier and be competitive at Davidson next weekend," said Greene.

The Camels head back on the road for a matchup with in-state foe Davidson. Action will begin at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 16, with CU battling the Wildcats.
