Campbell Splits Dual Matches, Earns First Southern Conference Win

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Campbell split a pair of dual meets Wednesday in Gore Arena, defeating VMI 32-9 and falling to North Carolina State 27-13. The Camels are now 2-5 overall, and the victory over the Keydets was Campbell's first in Southern Conference action.

After the Wolfpack defeated the Keydets in the second match of the day, VMI moved to 0-4 (0-1 SoCon) and NC State now stands at 2-0.

Campbell won eight of the ten matches against VMI, while earning three wins over NC State.

No. 30 Eric Montoya, Paul Duggan, and John Merickel each went 2-0 on the day.

Montoya, a freshman who broke into national rankings this week, improved to 24-10 on the year at 125 pounds. He pinned VMI's Armando Herrera in 4:45 and earned a hard-fought 5-4 decision over NC State's Joe DeAngelo.

At the 165-pound spot, Duggan, a sophomore, posted two major decisions to improve to 14-10 overall. He topped VMI's Mark Darr 11-1 and NC State's Mardel Gabriel 14-4.

Merickel, a senior, tabbed a 9-5 decision over VMI's Urayoan Garcia before pinning NC State's Bill Cook in 1:04 at 197 pounds. He now stands at 9-12 on the season.

Campbell will have six days of rest before traveling to Boone, N.C. where they will take on SoCon foe Appalachian State.
