BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Campbell wrestling fell to VMI Friday night at Carter Gym, 45-8. Senior Daniel Luty and sophomore Ville Heino earned wins for the Camels, both extending their undefeated dual streak at home this season.
"Daniel looked good, he won by tech fall and dominated the guy in almost all positions," head coach Cary Kolat said. "He started a little rough and then turned it up and that's what we want to see, a guy turning it up and getting stronger in the third period.
"Ville has been Ville; he got the win, and we have to get the wins, but he was a little flat from where he was last week. But you're going to have those, it's peaks and valleys when you're competing."
Heino downed VMI's Derek Thurman (Dec. 10-5), giving the Helsinki, Finland native 16 total wins this season; he remains unbeaten in duals in his sophomore campaign, 5-0 overall, and 3-0 in the Southern Conference.
Luty's took his bout Friday night by way of tech fall, 16-1, over the Keydets' Sam Pauljay. The Freemont, Calif., native improved his 2014-15 dual record to 2-1 this season with the victory, 1-0 in conference play.
"My coaches were emphasizing not to start off too high tempo, to work my way and tire him out," Luty said. "The plan worked out well and I was able to get some back points and controlled him pretty well.
"It's a new atmosphere since we're in Carter Gym. It's a little closer but it feels like there are 300 or 500 people here. It gets loud, and it feels good."
The Camels will return to action Thursday as they host Gardner-Webb at 6 p.m. on senior night, the last home match of the 2014-15 season; Luty and senior Garrison Matthews will be honored prior to the match.
"I hope the guys in the lineup who are seniors can come out of here with a win," Kolat said. "It's their last chance to wrestle at Campbell University, on this campus and at Carter Gym. Hopefully we have a great turnout again like we did tonight."
