BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Wrestling fell to Grand Canyon 21-16 in their season and home opener at Carter Gym. Paul Duggan (165 lbs), Ville Heino (184 lbs), Jere Heino (HWT) and Nathan Kraisser (133 lbs) each won their respective weight classes in an exciting dual. Campbell heads to West Virginia next weekend to compete in the Mountaineer Quad as they will face Arizona State, Drexel and West Virginia on Nov. 7.
Duggan picked up the first team points for Campbell as he earned six for pinning Bobby Reece in 1:40. Duggan recorded the initial takedown early in the bout and earned four near fall points before pinning Reece to win the 165 weight class 6-0.
Ville Heino took on Cale Wilson from Grand Canyon in the 184-pound bout. Heino got the early takedown, but Wilson managed to escape for one point. Wilson chose down starting the second period and earned an escape point, but Heino managed to get a takedown for two more. Heino recorded three takedowns and an escape for seven total points and earned one stalling point from Wilson as he won the bout by a decision of 8-3 earning three more team points for the Camels.
The heavyweight match was the most thrilling of the afternoon going to tie-breaker rounds. Jere Heino and Danny Chaid went scoreless in the first period as Heino chose down to start the second. He earned two points for a reversal only to have Chaid escape. Heino got two more points for a takedown but Chaid again escape the Fins clutches heading into the third period with the score 4-2 in Campbell's favor. Chaid escaped after starting on the bottom and took down Heino for three points to take the lead, but Heino managed to escape just in time to tie the bout 5-5 heading to overtime. After going through three overtimes with each grappler earning just one point from escapes, the bout went to sudden victory. Heino had just enough strength left to take down Chaid and won by a decision of 8-6 (TB-1).
Kraisser took on Juaquin Olivas in the 133 weight class. Kraisser took control early earning two takedowns over the first two periods for a 4-1 lead. Going into the third, Kraisser chose down and earned a quick escape point. He had two takedowns and gained one point for Olivas' stalling. Add one more point for his 3:37 of riding time and Kraisser claimed the 133 lbs bout with a major decision of 11-3 for four team points.
