PEMBROKE, N.C. – Monte Britton went 3-1 at the Pembroke Classic on Nov. 7 at UNC Pembroke in route to his second place title at 165-pounds. Jordan Eley, Brock Cooper and Robert Berry all finished 3-2 wrestling unattached for Campbell.
William Pryor, Collin Stewart, Melik Jimenez, Ryan Ashley and Caleb Edwards all finished 1-2 wrestling unattached, while Aaron Burton went 0-2 at the classic.
Britton started the competition with a first round bye before facing UNC Pembroke's Brysen Thorpe. Britton pinned Thorpe in 4:20 and moved on to take down Drew Chappell (Greensboro College) in a 9-3 decision. He followed the two wins with his third of the day coming in a 6-4 decision over the host schools Faris Teia (UNCP). Britton had reached the championship match where he was slated to face Jake Glunt from Belmont Abbey University. Glunt gave Britton a battle and beat him out winning by decision 12-6 handing Britton the second place title.
Eley was pinned by Matthew Raines of George Mason in 55 seconds at 141-pounds. In the consolation round, he recorded two decisions and a major decision before falling in a major. Eley's wins came as a 3-2 decision over Samuel Bartram (UNC Pem.), a 4-3 decision over Lontay Greene (Spart. Met.) and a 14-5 major decision over Efrain Tello (Spart. Met.). Jake Smith of UNC Pembroke ended Eley's run defeating the Camel in a 10-0 major decision.
Cooper won his first bout at 149 pounds pinning Justin Graham from Allen University in 4:58. He faced Troy Worthen (UCF) in a competitive match but fell in sudden victory by a 3-2 decision. Cooper moved to the consolation bracket where he earned a 6-2 decision over Joey Rocca and a 15-8 decision over Clay Perry before he lost to Isaac King (St. Andrews) in a 9-6 decision.
Berry wrestled unattached at 157 pounds for the Camels. After receiving a first-round bye, he was pinned by Casey Mallory (UNC Pem.) in 2:45. Berry entered the consolation bouts and won his first match by a forfeit from Mitchell Scrivens. He followed by pinning his next two opponents in 2:47 and 1:40, respectively. He then lost to Zach Dobbins by a 2-0 decision finishing the classic 3-2.
Pryor's lone win came in the form of a 9-2 decision over Davion Powell (Allen University). Stewart picked up an 11-10 decision over Brennan Patton from St. Andrews and Jimenez's 6-4 decision came over Kavorius Perry also of St. Andrews.
Ashley earned a 15-2 major decision over Jeremy McCalsen from Allen and Edwards' victory came over Julian Gibbs in a 3-2 decision wrapping up the classic for the Camels.
