BLACKSBURG, Va. – Zane Knight and Drew Walker finish fifth and sixth, respectively, at the Hokie Open on the campus of Virginia Tech. Knight went 4-1 wrestling unattached in the 149-pound weight class while Walker finished the open 3-2 at 133-pounds.
Knight opened the event losing to Zach Shareef of Chattanooga in a 13-6 decision. He continued wrestling in the consolation rounds earning three consecutive decisions. Knight took down Stephen Midkiff of VMI 3-0, Marcus Miraglia from Limestone 7-4 and Cole Mangum from App. St. 4-0. In his final bout, Knight Pinned Miller Clark from App. St to claim the fifth place finish in the 149 weight class.
Walker wrestling at 133-pounds went 3-2 at the Hokie open. He received a first round bye and picked up a 10-7 decision over Brandon Leynaud from Duke before falling to AC Headlee from North Carolina in a 6-2 decision.
Moving into the consolation bracket, Walker squared up against Jaquan Loney from Old Dominion and won by major decision (19-8). He recorded another major decision as he defeated Xavial Ramos from Duke 15-5. Walker had to face Keegan Moore from West Virginia to decide who placed fifth at 133 pounds. The Mountaineer earned the win by pinning Walker, who earned the sixth place finish.
Jonathan Ryan and Kaleb Warner also traveled to the Hokie Open wrestling unattached for the Camels. Ryan went 0-2 at 133 pounds losing by a 9-2 decision and an 18-2 major decision. Warner earned a pin over Joey Nigro in 3:57 but fell in a 3-0 decision to Steven Smith (VMI). He proceeded to the consolation round but forfeited to Cole Mangum due to an injury finishing 1-2 at 149 pounds.
