BUIES CREEK, N.C. – The Camels fell to the Mountaineers Wednesday night 28-12 in Carter Gym. Campbell moves to 0-7 on the season and 0-2 in the Southern Conference while Appalachian State improves to 7-2, 2-0. The Orange and Black return to action Friday, Jan. 8, on day one of the Virginia Duals.
"A little bit of quit in areas we shouldn't have," said head coach Cary Kolat. "Our key matchups were 141 lbs., 165 lbs. and 197 lbs. Those matches went back and forth and at the end they were the ones sucking it up and making it happen in the last 30 seconds and that's what those matches came down too."
"As a team we are coming off of a good performance at the [Southern] Scuffle," said Kolat. "And I was hoping to ride that momentum into this dual. I saw glimpses of it but not enough consistency. We are still not consistent and you are never going to be a great team until you are consistent."
Campbell won three weight classes in 133 lbs., 157 lbs., and 184 lbs. Nathan Kraisser earned an 18-0 tech fall over Jacob Grigg, his fifth of the season. Quentin Perez picked up his first conference dual win over Angel Najar in a 13-7 decision to bring the Camels within four points in the team score. Ville Heino recorded his fourth major decision (12-3) of the season over Taylor Jackson in the 184 bout.
Appalachian State displayed their strength as they won four bouts with bonus points including a pin (174 lbs.), two major decisions (149 lbs. and 285 lbs.) and a tech fall (125 lbs.) over the Camels.
Heavyweight #5/6 Denzel Dejournette toppled Jere Heino in an 11-3 major and 174-pound grappler #20 Nick Kee pinned Matthew Olauson in 4:32 to give the Mountaineers ten team points between the two bouts. Vito Pasone at 125-pounds scored App State's only tech fall (22-5, 5:00) of the dual over Collin Stewart, for five more team points.
The Camels have a quick turn around as they leave Thursday, Jan. 7, to go to Hampton, Va. to participate in the 36th annual Virginia Duals on Jan. 8-9. Campbell will face Arizona State on Friday, Jan. 8, at 9 a.m. in a rematch from the Mountaineer Duals (WVa.) where the Sun Devils defeated the Camels 29-6. The match is followed by a dual against #24 Old Dominion at 11 a.m.
