Hampton, Va. – The Camels fell to the Bulldogs from The Citadel, 22-17 on day two of the 36th annual Virginia Duals. Campbell moves to 0-11 on the season as it completed the weekend 0-4 at the Duals. Nathan Kraisser won all four of his individual bouts at 133 pounds while Paul Duggan (165 lbs.) and Ville Heino (184 lbs.) both went 3-1 on the weekend.
The match started with an 8-7 decision for Charles Kearney over Collin Stewart at 125 pounds to give The Citadel a 3-0 lead. Kraisser came to the mat next at 133 pounds and earned six team points for the Camels as he pinned Caleb Smith in just 2:35 to swing the score in Campbell's favor 6-3.
The Citadel picked up the next three bouts as Tyler Buckiso won the 141 weight class with a 2-1 decision over Lucas Stewart, #20 Matthew Frisch won over Zane Knight in a 4-0 decision at 149-lbs. and Aaron Walker defeated Quentin Perez in an 11-3 major decision putting the team score at 13-6 in The Citadel's favor.
Paul Duggan put the Camels back in contention for a possible win as he pinned Daniel Smith as time was about to run out in the third period. The final call came at 6:56 bringing Campbell within one of The Citadel 13-12.
Timothy Knipl won the 174 bout as he recorded a 5-4 decision over Matthew Olauson after factoring in Knipl's 1:10 of riding time. The Citadel went up 16-12 in the team score with three weight classes left.
Ville Heino the junior grappler from Helsinki, Finland, took to the mat as he faced Sawyer Root in the 184 match. Heino upended Root in an 18-3 tech fall including five takedowns, two- and four-point near falls, two escapes and a point for his 3:07 of riding time. The tech fall gave the Camels their second lead of the match, as they went up 17-16 over The Citadel.
With the Camels leading and two bouts left to wrestle, Marshall Haas and Austin McNeill took to the mat for the 197 match. Haas earned two takedowns an escape and the riding time to defeat McNeill in a 6-2 decision giving the Bulldogs the 19-17 lead.
In the last bout of the match, Joseph Bexley and Jere Heino squared off at heavyweight. With the dual on the line, both wrestlers gave everything they had, but it was Bexley who emerged victorious as he defeated Heino with a 7-4 decision. With Bexley's win, the dual was completed and The Citadel handed the Camels a 22-17 loss.
Campbell has a few days break before they travel to Lexington, Virginia to take on the Keydets of Virginia Military Institute on January 15 at 7:30 p.m.
