BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Campbell opens play Friday in the Jersey Mike's Jamaica Classic with a 2:00 p.m. tipoff against MEAC member Florida A&M at the Montego Bay Convention Centre. All eight games in the Jamaica Classic will be televised by CBS Sports Network.
After opening with a thrilling 97-93 OT victory vs. UNC Wilmington, the Fighting Camels (1-2) have dropped their last two, most recently Monday's 81-73 loss at Ohio. Florida A&M (2-0) owns wins over Jacksonville (65-50) and Tuskegee (62-55).
The Camels will also face Austin Peay Sunday at 2:30 p.m. in their first-ever regular season games on international soil.
On Monday, Ohio used a 12-2 run midway through the second half and held off visiting Campbell at the Ohio Convocation Center. Jason Carter scored 24 points on 8-10 shooting from the floor and 8-10 from the line for the Bobcats, who made 12-of-19 from the field in the second half (63%).
Chris Clemons led Campbell with 26 points, while
Isaac Chatman added 16 and
Andrew Eudy 12 for the Camels, who shot 61 percent in the opening half, but made only 10-32 (.313) after intermission.
Clemons enters Friday's game as the nation's 2nd-leading scorer (32.3), while leading the country in free throws made (35) and attempted (41). Chatman contributes 14.7 points and 5.3 rebounds per outing, while Eudy is averaging 12.7 points, 5.7 boards and ranks 2nd nationally in 3-point shooting percentage (.889).
FAMU's leading scorer from a year ago, senior Justin Ravenel, tops the club with a 15.0 average through two games. Junior transfer Tracy Hector and sophomore Kamron Reaves average 10.5 each. Four Rattlers scored between 11 and 10 points in the season opener vs. Jacksonville, while Ravenel had 21 on 7-8 shooting (5-6 threes) vs. Division II Tuskegee.
Campbell-Florida A&M Notes:
- Campbell and Florida A&M have not met in men's basketball since Dec. 28, 1979 when the Camels won 90-62 at Greensboro, N.C.
- Campbell is 1-5 vs. Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference members since 2013-14, most recently an 82-66 loss Nov. 19, 2016 at Morgan State.
- FAMU finished 9-25 overall, 7-9 in the MEAC last season, its first under head coach Robert McCullum.
- The Rattlers only play two home games - both vs. Division II schools - in November and December. FAMU's travels include trips to South Florida, Loyola Marymount, DePaul, Georgia Tech, Utah, Oregon, Portland and Memphis.
- Florida A&M was picked 7th (of 12 schools) in the preseason MEAC poll. Senior guard Justin Ravenel was a 3rd-team preseason all-conference pick after averaging 8.6 points and shooting 39% from 3-point range last year.
- DJ Jones, who transferred from Tulane, is the younger brother of Golden State Warrior Damian Jones.
- Both Campbell and Florida Agricultural and Mechnical University were founded in 1887. FAMU is located on the highest geographical hill in Tallahassee and is the 5th-largest HBCU in the nation.
- Under the direction of College Football Hall of Fame coach Jake Gaither, the Rattlers won six Black College Football National Championships and claimed the first NCAA Division I-AA (now FCS) national title in 1978.
- Notable FAMU alumni include Althea Gibson, the first black athlete to win a tennis Grand Slam championship (1954 French Open), Harlem Globetrotter Meadowlark Lemon, Baseball Hall of Fame member Andre Dawson, NFL standout and Olympic Gold medalist Bob Hayes, and alto jazz saxophonist "Cannonball" Adderly.
