BUIES CREEK, N.C. – After a record setting day at Davidson, Campbell quarterback
Daniel Smith has been named Pioneer Football League Offensive Player of the Week.
Smith exploded for the most rushing yards by a quarterback in the FCS this season, running for 289 yards and four touchdowns in Campbell's 42-29 win at Davidson.
Smith's 289 yards came on 23 carries, breaking
De'Shawn Jones' 2015 CU single-game record (at Davidson, 10/31/15). A Leesburg, Va. native, Smith's 289 yards were the most by a FCS quarterback this season, and the third most overall in a single game.
Smith also surpassed Jones' single-season rushing record (1,079), and with one game to go in the season, has tallied 1,191 yards on the ground.
Smith also passed for a TD, going 7-for-18 with 156 yards passing and an interception, accounting for five TDs, also a school record, for the third time this season.
The redshirt freshman tallied a touchdown in each quarter, notching the game's first points at the 11:04 mark of the first, then putting Campbell ahead at 21-15 with 2:34 to go in the second quarter.
He gave Campbell its largest lead of the game (35-15) with his 80 yard TD run in the third. Smith's fourth quarter score helped seal the win, giving CU the 42-29 advantage.
Coming into the game second in the country in rushing, he owns 11 rushing scores on the year. Smith adds 1,742 yards passing with 18 touchdowns.
The PFL weekly honor is the first for Smith this season. He has been named honorable mention STATS FCS Freshman Player of the Week twice.
Campbell finishes out the 2017 season at home on November 11 against Drake.
