WILKES-BARRE, PA. – Three Campbell wrestlers, competing unattached, placed Friday at the Wilkes Open.
Chris Kober won the 197 consolation bracket to take fifth, while
Laith Alsous at 285 and
Charlie Andrews at 174 both fell in their respective consolation finals, both placing sixth.
Junior heavyweight
Jere Heino was the only attached Camel, going 2-0 in the tournament before withdrawing due to injury. Heino opened the day with a 7-3 decision over Jake Peru of Binghamton (unattached). He also defeated Newman's Thor Balavage (unattached) by major decision, 13-3.
Also at heavyweight for the Camels, wrestling unattached, Alsous took fifth in the bracket. The freshman pinned Maine's Reagan Billingsley in the opening round (2:47), then dropped a 4-0 decision to Brett Dempsey of American. Alsous followed with a 4-0 victory over Dylan D'amore (unattached) of Rutgers, and advanced again via medical forfeit. He added a 2-0 win over Drexel's Vincenzo Pelusi before falling to Rutgers' Alexander Esposito (unattached) in the fifth place match by fall (4:18).
At 197, Kober placed fifth, going 4-1 on the day. The freshman defeated Michigan's JT Correll (unattached) 6-2 to start the tournament, then fell to Rutger's Anthony Messner (unattached) 5-2. Kober reeled off three straight wins to finish the tournament, defeating Joseph Doyle of Binghamton (unattached) 4-2, then Michael Okaro of Middlesex (unattached) by major decision 14-6. Kober took the fifth place match over Lehigh's Tom Murray by medical forfeit.
Andrews took sixth at 174, picking up three straight wins to make it to the consolation final after an opening round loss to Michael Eckhart of American, 9-3. Andrews downed Thomas Grosso of Sacred Heart, 5-1, then advanced by medical forfeit over Jacob Oliver of Edinboro (unattached), and defeated Dom Celli of Sacred Heart 10-6. The CU freshman was edged 4-2 in the fifth place match by Josh Young of Franklin and Marshall (unattached).

Campbell will kick off 2018 at the Southern Scuffle, January 1-2 in Chattanooga, Tenn.
