Waters Named to Verizon
District III All-Academic
Team
BUIES CREEK, N.C. - Senior
outfielder Jessica Waters, who was named a second-team
all-conference honoree yesterday, was named to the Verizon ™
District III All-Academic Softball Team, Thursday.
Waters, a native of Lake Alfred, Fla. (Auburndale High School)
was the Camels' staring centerfielder and led off the CU batting
order for a majority of the season. She started 60 of Campbell's 61
games and led the team with 12 of 14 stolen bases. She was third in
the line-up with a .320 batting average and was perfect in the
field this season, committing no errors in 54 chances.
The athletic training major struck out just seven times in 194
at-bats and finished the season with 62 hits, including five
doubles, one triple and one home run.
Waters transferred to Campbell from Manatee Community College
in Florida in 2001. She was second on the CU roster last season
with 33 RBI.
Waters was also the recipient of the 2002 Coaches' Award at the
athletics year-end ceremony.
She posted a 3.21 GPA in the athletic training program to
become eligible for the award. The athletic training program at
Campbell is one of just 130 programs in the country to be
accredited by the Committee on Accreditation of Allied Health
Education Programs (CAAHEP), a committee of the American Medical
Association (AMA). The Campbell program received accreditation
after an extensive two-year evaluation process in October of
2000.
The nominees are voted on by members of the College Sports
Information Directors of America (Co-SIDA) from within their same
geographical region. The first-team regional award winners will be
listed on a national ballot for Verizon Academic All-American
honors.
She becomes the fourth Campbell student-athlete to earn Verizon
All-Academic honors this season. Campbell volleyball player Crystal
Brim also earned first team honors, while soccer players Sara Davis
and Jennifer Feltis were each named to the second team in the
fall.
Waters was one of four A-Sun student-athletes to earn academic
honors. She was joined by Florida Atlantic's Ginny Matthews and
Stetson's duo of Katie Harrigan and Alison Parker. They were joined
by three members from the ACC (Virginia, North Carolina, Florida
State), one from the SEC (Florida) and three from the Big East
(Virginia Tech).
