Lady Camels Start 2002-03 Basketball Season Friday Night

Campbell hosts Appalachian State at 7:00 p.m. in Carter Gym

BUIES CREEK, N.C. - The Campbell University women's basketball team will open up the 2002-03 season as they host Appalachian State Friday Night at 7:00 p.m. in Carter Gymnasium.

For head coach Wanda Watkins, this will be her 22nd year at the helm. She returns eight letterwinners from last season's 13-15 squad.

The Lady Camels are 20-10 all-time in their season openers. Under Watkins the team has gone 13-8 in their season debuts. In 30 years the women's squad has posted a 250-74 (.772) record in Carter Gym.

ASU leads the all-time series at 8-6, including a 4-3 record versus Campbell in Carter Gym. ASU won last season's Dec. 17 meeting 86-65 after erupting for 51 points in the second half. ASU's Aisha Bryant led all players with 19 points. For Campbell, Terra Guandolo scored 11 points on 5-7 shooting, while Kristal Troy added nine.

CU has opened their season against ASU once all-time, losing on Dec. 2, 1995 in Boone by a score of 78-96.

Last year, Campbell won their Nov. 17 season opener against UNC Wilmington in Carter Gym, 49-44.

The Lady Camels have only once played on a Nov. 22 date. On Nov. 22, 1983, Campbell opened their season with a win over Belmont, 63-51, at Carter Gym in Watkins' third season as head coach.

This is the regular season opener for both teams. ASU won their exhibition game against the Smokey Mountain Swarm, 77-44.

The Campbell University Radio Network will carry Friday's game, originating from flagship station WCCE 90.1 FM (Buies Creek). WAZZ 1490 AM (Fayetteville), WSTK 910 AM (Jacksonville), WAGR 1340 AM (Lumberton) and WEWO 1460 AM (Laurinburg) will also air the contest.
