Sara Moore Becomes 15th Lady Camel to Reach 1,000
Points
BUIES CREEK,
N.C. Sara Moore scored 18 points at UNC Wilmington on Dec.
19 to become the 15th player in Campbell University
women's basketball history to score 1,000 points in a career.
The senior guard from Fincastle, Va., was 5-of-10 from the
field and 5-of-6 from the charity stripe to lead the Lady Camels to
a 63-59 win over the Seahawks. She also connected on three triples
to become the school's career record holder in most three-pointers
made (123).
"It was obvious from the get-go that Sara was there to show
our team that she was ready to score when they needed her to," said
head coach Wanda Watkins. "It's really important for the seniors
to come out and exhibit that type of leadership."
Moore's point total now stands at 1,002 points in 90 outings.
Her sister Ashley, who played for the Lady Camels from 1994-98,
also scored 1,000 points in her career. They become the first set
of sisters in the school's history to accomplish the feat.
A three-time All-TAAC selection, Moore is the fourth leading
scorer (9.4 ppg) and rebounder (4.6 rpg) for Campbell this season.
She is also a three-time all-academic honoree and garnered GTE
Academic All-District 3 status last season.
She is also approaching two additional achievements. She
needs 86 rebounds for 500 and 43 three-point field goal attempts to
surpass the career record (388).
Moore is the second player for Campbell to reach this
milestone this season. Junior center April Cromartie of Garland,
N.C., scored 15 points against Mercer earlier in the year for her
1,000th point. She now has 1,047 points in 67
games.
"I couldn't be more proud of Sara and April and what they've
been able to accomplish during their careers. I'm just so lucky
to have had the opportunity to coach these girls," said
Watkins.
Of the 15 players currently listed with 1,000 or more points
in Campbell's record book, Connie Hall (1974-78, 1233 pts.) is the
only one who didn't play for Coach Watkins.
The Lady Camels return to action on Friday against Norfolk
State at 7:00 pm. Antionette Matthews Flowers, a former
All-American for the Lady Camels, is an assistant coach with the
Spartans.
