Campbell Finishes Sixth at Edwin Watts Carolinas Classic

PINEHURST, N.C. - Sharon O'Neill placed seventh individually and Campbell University rallied to finish in a sixth-place tie on Tuesday at the Edwin Watts Carolinas Women's Golf Classic at Pinehurst #8.
The Lady Camels rebounded from a first-round 323 to shoot 309 on Tuesday and finish in a tie with James Madison in the 22-school field. Memphis won the event by one stroke (610) over UNC Greensboro (611). Charleston Southern (612) was third, followed by UNC Wilmington (622) and Penn State (631).
Among the teams Campbell defeated were Atlantic Sun members Georgia State (641) and Jacksonville State (660). CU also shot lower than UAB (639), East Carolina (640), Maryland (645), Kansas (648), Coastal Carolina (654) and Iowa (661), among others.
O'Neill, a junior from Mackay, Australia, shot 76-77-153 on the par-72, 5869-yard layout. Marianne Ruud of Memphis shot an even-par 72 on Tuesday and finished in a four-way tie for first place with Julie St. Onge of Charleston Southern, Dani Heimbecker of UNCG and Carol Green from James Madison.
"We shot the second-lowest round of the day and it was a good comeback in windy conditions, but not good enough," said Campbell head coach John Crooks.
The Lady Camels return to action on Mar. 4-5 at the Tulane Green Wave Classic.
