BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Steve Hollinger, Antonio Da Silva and Jason Kirk of Campbell University have earned post-season men's soccer honors from the Atlantic Sun Conference. Hollinger was named to the all-conference first team, while Da Silva gained second-team honors. Kirk was selected to the A-Sun All-Freshman team.
Hollinger, a sophomore defender from Gilbert, Ariz., started all 15 games he played at sweeper. A member of the 2000 A-Sun All-Freshman squad, he has started each of the 33 matches in which he has appeared in a Camel uniform.
During the 2001 season, Hollinger scored one goal and assisted on two others. He netted his second career goal on Nov. 3 in a 5-3 A-Sun win at Belmont.
Da Silva, a senior forward from Recife, Brazil, tied with Kirk for team scoring honors with 15 points on five goals and five assists. He ranked sixth among the latest A-Sun assists leaders standings. Da Silva produced career-highs in starts, shots, assists and points, while matching his career-best numbers in games played and goals scored.
He tallied the game-winning goal at Belmont and scored twice in Campbell's 3-2 overtime loss to then-18th-ranked Georgia State. Da Silva closed his three-year Camel career with 38 points on 13 goals and 12 assists in 53 matches.
A Carlisle, Pa., product, Kirk ranked as the second-leading goal scorer among Atlantic Sun freshmen this year, trailing only Ian Zarac of Stetson. He topped the Fighting Camels with seven strikes, including game-winners against UNC Wilmington and Gardner-Webb. His first career assists came on the game's only goal in a season-ending victory vs. Wofford. Kirk was also presented Campbell's Jim McVeigh Award as the team's most promising freshman.
Senior midfielder Max Rooke of regular-season co-champion Mercer was named A-Sun Player of the Year. Sean Murphy, who guided Stetson to a tie for first place in the regular season race, was selected as the league's Coach of the Year. Defender Tom Sobczak of Florida Atlantic was named A-Sun Freshman of the Year.
