Women's Cross Country Season Outlook

With both experience and leadership returning to the trails, Campbell head coach Ken Frenette has high expectations for the 2001 cross country season. He feels his teams will be solid factors in competition.
“Both the men’s and women’s teams should be right in the thick of things,” said Frenette, who is entering his 13th year as the Camel’s head coach. “I feel the key to our success will be consistency, training, and being able to stay healthy.”
The men lost two runners to graduation from last year’s squad that finished fourth at the 2000 TAAC Championships. While the women lost four members from a team that finished fifth at the conference meet.
Despite losing four harriers from last year’s squad, the 2001 women’s cross country team returns four talented and experienced runners.
Senior Natalie Lewis of Lillington, N.C., returns to the trails after being hampered by chronic knee pains last season. She turned in her best performance at the TAAC Championships, where she finished 31st (20:04).
“Natalie’s junior season wasn’t what we had hoped for, because of chronic knee pains”, said Coach Frenette. Our number one goal is for her to train at a level she can stay healthy, in order to improve upon last year.”
Junior Heather Lee of Calgary, Alberta is coming off her best season as a collegian. She earned All-TAAC honors with a personal-best time (18:36) at the conference meet. Lee also finished third (18:48) at the North Carolina Collegiate Championship.
As a member of the track and field team, Lee set new school-records in five events - the 800 M, 1500 M, Mile, 3000 and 5000 meters. She earned all-conference honors in the 1500 meters.
“Heather had an outstanding sophomore campaign”, said Coach Frenette. “She really took a big step to the next level, by breaking a number of school records.”
Sophomore Renee Acker of Waunakee, W.I., faced a nagging knee injury last season, which did not allow her to compete in three events. Her best showing came at the TAAC Championships when she finished 17th (19:23).
The fourth returning member is sophomore Lisa Lee of Grimsby, Canada. In her first year of collegiate competition, Lee was an impact runner competing in all the events last season. Her personal-best time came at the Great American Cross Country Festival when she ran a 19:09.
Newcomers Kathleen Dunscomb, Shelly Hillard and Miranda Thomas will add plenty of depth to the women’s squad.
