Campbell Advances To TAAC Final With 84-55 Win Over Troy State

ORLANDO, FLA. – April Cromartie and Crystal Clary each registered double-doubles and top-seeded Campbell University defeated Troy State 84-55 on Friday in the semifinals of the Trans America Athletic Conference Women’s Basketball Tournament at the UCF Arena.
The defending champion Lady Camels (22-6) will play Georgia State in a re-match of last year's final at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday that will be televised live by Fox Sports Net South and the Sunshine Network.
For the second-straight game, Campbell shot 60 percent or better from the floor in the second half. Campbell led 25-21 at the break, but the Lady Camels outscored Troy State 59-34 in the final 20 minutes by hitting 18-of-30 shots, while the Trojans made just 29 percent of their attempts in the period. Campbell shot 63 percent from the field in the final half during Thursday’s 21-point quarterfinal victory over Samford.
Cromartie, the TAAC Player of the Year, scored 27 points on 8-of-15 shooting from the field and 11-of-14 free throws, and grabbed 14 rebounds. Clary, the TAAC Freshman of the Year, added 14 points and 11 boards. Stacey Hinkle came off the Campbell bench and added 12 points. Point guard Janice Washington had eight points, seven assists and no turnovers.
Jennifer McInnis led Troy State (15-14) with 17 points. Chaquita Alexander added 12 and Laura Schwendeman scored 10 for the Trojans, who upset Campbell last Saturday at Troy, Ala., in the regular season finale.
Campbell held a commanding 53-30 advantage on the boards and grabbed 18 offensive rebounds. The Lady Camels made 29-of-40 free throws, while Troy State converted just 9-of-15 from the stripe. CU ended the game hitting 45 percent from the field (25-56) after making just 27 percent in the first period. Troy State shot 33 percent (20-61) from the floor for the game. [ box ]
