Campbell Leads Atlantic Sun Men's Golf
Championship After 18 Holes
FRANKLIN,
TENN. Campbell recorded its best team score of the year by
eight strokes to take a three-stroke lead after the first round of
the Atlantic Sun Conference Men's Golf Championship on Monday at
the Vanderbilt Legends Club.
Four
Fighting Camels broke par for an eight-under 276 team total on the
par-71, 6759-yard layout. The 18-hole team total was Campbell's
lowest ever in conference tournament play, including 11 years as an
Atlantic Sun member, and only two shots off the school record of
274.
Campbell
junior Matt McIntyre of Garland, N.C., fired a collegiate
career-low round of three-under 68 to sit in a four-way tie for
fourth place. Fredric Sundberg and Johan Rydheim notched two-under
69s, while sophomore Kyle Spahr fired a one-under 70.
The
Camels lead the 12-team A-Sun field by three strokes over defending
champion Central Florida and newest A-Sun member North Florida,
both of which finished Monday's action at five-under 279. Georgia
State, Mercer and host Belmont each shot three-under 281. Only nine
strokes separate the top eight teams in the event after 18
holes.
The
A-Sun Championship single round team record is 272, shot by Georgia
Southern in the second round of the 1986 event.
Miguel
Ordonez of North Florida leads individual race at the 54-hole event
by three strokes after shooting a seven-under 64, one stroke off
the A-Sun Championship record 63 set by Georgia Southern's Fred
Benton in the 1986 second round.
Giwon
Suh of UCF and Duncan Stewart of Jacksonville finished Monday's
round at four-under 67 to tie for second. UCF's Andreas Hoegberg,
Brenton Flynn of Belmont and Ben Taylor of Georgia State are tied
with McIntyre for fourth place, four strokes off the lead.
A
week ago, the Camels finished 14th in the 16-team Belmont
Invitational field on the same Legends Club course. On Monday,
Campbell knocked 23 strokes off its best round of last week's
tournament to take the first day lead in the conference
championship for the first time since 2002.
McIntyre
trimmed four strokes off his previous career collegiate low of the
even-par 72 he notched at last month's East Carolina Bradford Creek
Intercollegiate. Monday's outing marked the first time that the
2000 North Carolina 1-A state individual champion broke par in 16
collegiate events. His 68 matched Campbell's individual season-low
round hit by Rydheim, Spahr and Sundberg earlier in 2004-05.
Campbell's
previous best round in Atlantic Sun Championship play came on April
22, 2002 when the Fighting Camels shot an eight-under 280. The
team's best overall tournament 18-hole mark was a 274 at the UCF
Rio Pinar Intercollegiate on Oct. 22, 2001.
The
Camels will tee off Tuesday's second round beginning at 8:15 a.m.
(CDT). The Championship concludes Wednesday.
