Seven Camels Headed to
Summer Baseball Competition
BUIES CREEK, N.C.
Seven Campbell University baseball players will be in action in
summer leagues over the next several months, including six in the
Coastal Plain League.
Two Camels have been assigned to the
Fayetteville (N.C.) Swamp Dogs, who play at Riddle Stadium.
Catcher/first baseman Chris Wiley returns to Fayetteville for the
second-straight summer and his third year in the CPL. Wiley batted
.231 in 33 games for the Camels during the 2002 season. Last
summer at Fayetteville, the native of Dudley, N.C., hit .144 and
made 33 starts.
Catcher Jonathan
Sanderlin, a native of Virginia Beach, Va., joins Wiley on the
Swamp Dogs roster this summer after hitting .269 in 26 games for
Campbell during the spring.
Right-handed pitcher
Patrick Murray from Montpelier, Vt., will play with the Florence
(S.C.) RedWolves. During the 2002 season, Murray tied for eighth
place among Atlantic Sun Conference earned run average leaders
(3.80) and led the Camels in victories (7-6). He struck out 45
batters and walked just 16 in 64 innings.
Three Camels have been
assigned to the expansion Gastonia (N.C.) Grizzlies in the CPL for
the summer. Starting shortstop Derek Barrows from Sarasota, Fla.,
and third baseman Tom Rispoli of Madison, Ct., will be joined by
Fuquay-Varina, N.C., first baseman Josh Cotten. Barrows, the lone
Camel to start all 51 games during the 2002 season, batted .290
with 11 doubles, three home runs and 24 RBI. Rispoli ranked third
on CU in hitting with a .331 batting average in 48 games. He also
made five relief pitching appearances with no record and an 8.10
ERA. Cotten hit .224 with two homers and eight RBI in 25 games as
a freshman.
Campbell assistant coach
Scott Jackson also will spend the summer in the CPL as the head
coach of the Wilmington (N.C.) Sharks, where he served as an
assistant last year.
CU right-handed pitcher
Rob Finch, a native of Maywood, N.J., has been assigned to the
Front Royal (Va.) Cardinals of the Shenandoah Valley League for the
second-straight year. Finch posted a 1-3 record for CU this spring
with a 5.40 ERA with just seven walks in 35 innings.
The Coastal Plain League
is a collegiate summer baseball league with the rosters of its 12
franchises comprised of outstanding collegiate players from across
the country. The league uses wooden bats exclusively, giving
hitters a head start on professional careers, while providing fans
with a more traditional sounding game. Now in its sixth year of
operation, the CPL spans the eastern part of Virginia, North
Carolina and South Carolina.
The full CPL schedule
opens on Friday (May 31). Games involving Campbell players are
Wilmington at Fayetteville, Gastonia at Durham and Wilson at
Florence.
Campbell will host a CPL
game between the Durham Americans and Wilmington Sharks on Wed.,
July 24 at 6:00 p.m., on campus at Taylor Field.

Plain League schedules, rosters and statistics, visit the CPL web
