BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Nic Carter of Campbell University was selected in the fourth round of Monday's Major League Baseball amateur draft by the Milwaukee Brewers. The junior outfielder was the first Atlantic Sun Conference player selected in the annual event, taken 109th overall.
Carter's fourth-round selection marks the highest that a Campbell player has been picked in the draft since 1986 when John Posey was a second-round choice of the Baltimore Orioles. The only Campbell players picked higher than Carter since the draft was started in 1965 are Posey and 1974 Orioles first-round choice Marvin Townsend.
"Nic really matured as a player this past year. I'm very happy for him and the opportunity that he's going to have. Nic still has bargaining power to come back to school if he doesn't get the monetary offer he wants," said Campbell head coach Chip Smith.
Two other A-Sun players were drafted in the first 10 rounds. The Brewers selected catcher Jeremy Frost from the University of Central Florida in the 10th round with the 289th overall pick. Florida Atlantic outfielder L.J. Biernbaum was chosen in the 10th round by the San Diego Padres with the 295th selection.
Carter is the ninth Fighting Camel to be selected in the draft or sign a free agent contract since Coach Chip Smith arrived at Campbell in 1996.
A native of Parkersburg, W.Va., Carter ranked 10th among the list of all draft-eligible players from high schools or colleges in the state according to a pre-draft listing by Baseball America, which extensively covers minor league and amateur baseball throughout the nation.
A 6-foot-3, 185-pound outfielder, Carter led Campbell with a .381 batting average during his junior year, while rapping 14 doubles, three triples, 23 RBI and breaking his own record with 32 stolen bases. He led the Atlantic Sun Conference in steals, rated sixth in hitting and earned second-team all-conference honors.
He ended the year on a season-best 11-game hitting streak. Carter also strung together hits in 10-straight games earlier in the campaign. Carter also tied his career high for hits in a game with four, on four occasions during the 2002 season. He went 4-for-5 with two doubles and a triple in a win over Troy State on May 3.
In just three collegiate seasons, Carter already owns school career records for triples (15) and steals (76).
As a sophomore in 2001, Carter set the school record with four stolen bases in one game and batted .310 with seven doubles, seven triples and seven home runs. He swiped 31 bases to break the school record that stood for only one year.
An honorable mention freshman All-America selection by Collegiate Baseball in 2000, Carter set a school freshman class record with 13 thefts in his first collegiate campaign.
The son of Jay and Janice Carter, Nic Carter was a 1999 all-state selection in both baseball and basketball at Parkersburg (W.Va.) High School.
Ball State University right-handed pitcher Bryan Bullington was the first player chosen overall in the draft by the Pittsburgh Pirates.
