Campbell Brings Home Tenth
HARRISONBURG, Va.-- Campbell
University's Lantz Nixon finished third at the Colonial Athletic
Association Wrestling Championships on Saturday evening on the
campus of James Madison University. With his win in the
consolation final, Nixon was selected as a wild card to participate
in the NCAA Tournament.
Nixon, a 174-pound sophomore from Akron, Ohio, recorded a 3-1
overtime win over Ralph Everett from Hofstra in the consolation
finals to lead the Camels to a tenth place team finish.
On Saturday, day one of the Championships, Nixon lost his
opening round match to Everett (Hofstra) 5-2 before pinning Steve
Broglie of JMU to advance to the championship bracket.
In his opening match of the championship round, he recorded
his second pin of the tournament in a match with Bryon Nelson from
Boston University before defeating P.J. Ross of George Mason 5-3 to
advance to the consolation final with Everett.
For the season, Nixon finished with a 24-8 and improved to
34-20 for his career and becomes just the fifth in school-history
to advance to Nationals. John Christian and Billy Greene were the
last to accomplish this task, both advancing in 2000.
As a team the Camels finished with 16.50 teams points to
finish ahead of Boston College (9.50) and Wagner (-2.00).
Campbell finished the 2001-02 season with an overall record of 7-6
and 2-3 in the conference. The Fighting Camels two league wins was
a school-best since joining the CAA in 1996.
Nixon will take part in the NCAA Tournament Mar. 21-23 in
Albany, New York. The CAA will be represented by 28-wrestlers from
nine schools around the conference. [Home]
