BUIES CREEK, N.C.
- Junior Kristal Troy hit 16 points, including eight in the final
three minutes, and cleared 11 boards, but it was not enough to help
the Campbell University women's basketball team overcome UNC
Greensboro as they fell 57-61 Monday night in Carter
Gym.
The Spartans started the game with a 5-0 spurt and led for all but
2:30 of the first half. Sophomore Chantel Martin hit a three with
6:45 remaining to give the Lady Camels (1-3 overall) their first
lead of the night 23-22.
UNC Greensboro (3-1 overall) would mount a final push to hold a
three point advantage at the half after Lindsey Reed hit a lay-up,
part of her 10 point effort, with 41 seconds remaining.
UNCG held a decisive edge rebounding as they cleared 45 boards, 22
offensive, to Campbell's 39. Free throws down the stretch helped
the Spartans hold on to their lead in the waning minutes as they
converted 5-of-6 in the final three minutes and 13-of-21 for the
game to CU's 7-of-9.
The Spartans put on a 13-to-2 run to open up the second stanza with
Amanda Eaton hitting three trey's as she finished the game with 18
points.
The Lady Camels would hang around, however, mounting an 11-to-2 run
capped off with a three from Troy to cut the Spartan lead to two,
59-57, with 16 seconds remaining. Nicole Murray iced the game as
she hit two free throws to give the final 57-61 score.
"I think we played as a team tonight and with a lot of confidence,"
said head coach Wanda Watkins. "We got down because we went through
a spurt [in the second half] where we couldn't score and they hit
some key three's. They did a great job on the offensive boards;
they have a great team. Overall, I am very proud of our team effort
tonight."
The Lady Camels will next host Radford on Dec. 17 at 5:45 p.m. in
Carter Gym as part of a double-header with the men's team who will
tip off against High Point at 8:15 p.m.
