Gardner-Webb Downs Campbell 81-69
BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. Tim Behrendorff scored 20 points and
Gardner-Webb handed Campbell an 81-69 Atlantic Sun Conference men's
basketball loss on Friday at the Lutz-Yelton Convocation
Center.
Gardner-Webb (5-20, 2-10) opened the second half on a 12-3 run
as Behrendorff buried a pair of threes and scored in the paint to
push the margin to 52-39 with 16:13 left. The Bulldogs then pushed
the advantage to 16 (55-39) on Chris Wiggins' three from the left
corner with 15:01 to play.
Campbell (5-18, 1-11) was able to cut the margin to seven with
5:01 left, but could get no closer. Gardner-Webb, which avenged a
76-74 loss at Campbell last month, won back-to-back games for the
first time this year. Campbell dropped to 0-11 on the road this
year and is winless in its last 16 games away from Carter Gym.
Behrendorff, a 6-foot-11 center, made 6-of-11 shots, including
a pair of threes, and hit 6-of-6 free throws. Chris Wiggins added
16 points on 4-for-4 threes and 4-4 foul shots, while Simon Conn
came off the bench to contribute 11 points and seven rebounds.
Tarick Johnson led the Camels with a game-high 31 points on
13-of-21 shooting, 3-of-5 from 3-point range. Brooks Lee scored 12
points (nine in the second half) and added five assists, while
Jonte' Edwards had 11 points and 10 rebounds for his
second-straight double-double.
Gardner-Webb made 10-of-28 shots from beyond the arc and hit
all 13 of its free throw attempts. The Bulldogs shot 44.6 percent
from the field (29-65).
Johnson's performance marked the first time since the 2000-01
season that a Campbell player scored 30 or more points in
consecutive games. Adam Fellers tallied 35 points vs. Jacksonville
State on Dec. 4, 2000, then hit 32 against Coastal Carolina 10 days
later. The 6-foot-4 junior from Fayetteville has scored more than
20 points in each of his last five games.
The Bulldogs jumped to a 14-6 lead in the first 7:41, but the
Camels used a 10-4 flurry to take their first lead (29-28) on
Dominique Klein's pull-up jumper with 3:20 left in the opening
half. Despite Johnson's 16 first-half points, GWU led 40-36 at the
break, scoring 11 points off nine Campbell turnovers.
After Campbell cut the lead to 70-63 on Lee's trey from the
right wing with five minutes to play, GWU's Josh Chiles hit a
triple and Andre Manning added a breakaway lay-up off a turnover to
push the gap back to double digits.
Campbell shot 46.7 percent (28-60) for the game, 6-of-19
(.316) from 3-point range and 7-of-11 (.636) from the line. The
Camels, however, committed 17 turnovers that G-W turned into 20
points. Gardner-Webb had just 11 turnovers on the night.
The Camels return to action on Thursday at A-Sun North
Division leader Belmont. [Box Score]
