Sonn and Mark Lead Belmont Past Campbell 73-63

BUIES CREEK, N.C. - Belmont's front court tandem of Adam Mark and Adam Sonn combined for 46 points on 18-of-23 shooting from the field to lead the Bruins to a 73-63 Atlantic Sun Conference men's basketball win over Campbell University on Saturday at Carter Gym.
The Bruins (7-7, 3-0 A-Sun) won their fourth-straight game (including three league road contests) by building a 21-point lead in the second half, then fending off a late Campbell rally.
Mark scored 23 points on 10-of-13 shooting from the field to follow Thursday's 32-point effort at Gardner-Webb. Sonn added 23 points, hitting 8-of-10 from the floor, and matched his season-high with 18 rebounds. Steve Drabyn contributed 11 points, while Brian Collins had seven assists.
Freshman Robby Dupre scored a season-high 17 points in his first collegiate start for the Camels (3-10, 4-4), who lost their seventh-straight contest. Dupre, a native of Sanford, Fla., hit 4-of-6 threes and scored 16 of his points in the second half.
Guard Tarick Johnson added 17 points and a career-high 10 rebounds, while Jonte' Edwards had 14 points and Brooks Lee scored 10.
Dupre, Edwards and Johnson combined to shoot an even 50 percent from the floor (19-38), but the rest of the Camels made just 4-of-19 (21 percent) for the game.
Campbell jumped to an 11-4 lead in the first 5:21, but Belmont rallied with a 21-5 spurt over the next nine minutes. The Bruins led 33-21 at the break as Campbell hit just 36 percent of its shots in the first half.
Belmont led 57-36 with 6:56 to play, but a 10-0 Campbell rallied cut the margin to single digits. Johnson's pull-up jumper in the lane pared the gap to 64-55 with 1:32 to play, then Belmont's bench was hit with a technical foul five seconds later. Lee then made both free throws, but Campbell was unable to get closer as the Bruins knocked down 9-of-10 free throws in the final 57 seconds of play.
The Bruins shot 49 percent (25-51) from the field on the day and hit 18-of-23 (.783) from the free throw line. Campbell made 40 percent of its shots (23-57) and made 12-of-15 (.800) from the stripe. Both teams made 5-of-20 three-pointers and both finished with 33 rebounds, marking the first time in 13 games this year that the Camels have not been out-rebounded.
Campbell returns to action on Thursday when it travels to Lipscomb University for an 8:00 p.m. (CST) tip-off against the Bison, who will join the A-Sun in 2003-04.
