Campbell Softball Splits Series with
Belmont
BUIES
CREEK, N.C. The Campbell University softball team split its
Atlantic Sun doubleheader with Belmont Saturday afternoon losing
the first game 2-3 in 10 innings and winning the second game 3-1 at
the Eakes Softball Complex.
In
game one, Belmont (7-28-1, 4-11 A-Sun) scored first in the second
inning as LeAnna Crandall managed to cross the plate from second on
a Campbell throwing error. A single through the left gap by Jenny
Swann scored Julie Castelli from third base to give the Bruins a
2-0 lead.
Campbell
(20-24) answered in the bottom of the third as freshman Lindsey
Landry drew a walk from Belmont pitcher Mandy Miles and sophomore
Holly Harris hit her 11th double of the year. A fielding error by
Belmont allowed Landry to score from third to cut the Bruin lead to
2-1.
In
the sixth, senior Shannon O'Bryan hit her 10th home run of the year
to knot the score at 2-2. That gave O'Bryan the second highest
single season home run total in Campbell softball history and gives
her 39 for her career.
In
the 10th inning, Belmont would take the lead for good as Christi
Davis hit a sacrifice fly to center field, scoring Castelli from
third for the 3-2 win.
Miles
(4-15) recorded the win tossing a complete game and striking out
seven. Harris (6-7) took the loss for Campbell also working a
complete game and striking out eight.
In
game two, Campbell struck first in the second inning posting three
runs to take a 3-0 advantage. Harris picked up her second hit of
the day as she started the inning with a single through the left
gap. Another single through the left gap by freshman Erica Willis
gave the Fighting Camels runners at first and second, allowing
sophomore Joy-Lee Richardson to advance the runners with a
sacrifice bunt. Sophomore Amy Anderson reached on a fielder's
choice allowing Harris to score from third. An error by Belmont
scored Willis and Anderson scored on a wild pitch two batters
later.
Belmont
threatened the Campbell lead in the seventh inning as Sara Peeples
scored off a Castelli single to left field. Representing the tying
run at the plate, Jenny Swann fouled out to third for the final out
of the game.
Lexi
