Campbell Wins
One, Loses Two at Buzz Classic
ATLANTA
The Campbell University softball team (15-18, 3-5 A-Sun)
defeated Harvard 7-2, but lost to Charleston Southern 2-13 (5) and
to Tennessee Tech 0-1 (8) in Saturday's action at the Georgia Tech
Buzz Classic held at the Al Bishop Softball Complex.
The
Fighting Camels were scheduled to play on Friday as well, but the
first day of the tournament was cancelled due to inclement
weather.
In
game one, Charleston Southern jumped out to an early 2-0 lead Katie
McKay reached on a fielder's choice and Danielle Archey homered in
the second inning.
Tia
Miller retired the next nine Campbell batters en route to a
six-hit, two-run complete game.
Charleston
Southern scored one run in the third inning, six in the fourth and
another four in the fifth to make the score 13-0.
With
the bases loaded, freshman Lindsey Landry singled to score senior
Paige Smith from second and sophomore Amy Anderson from third.
Landry was thrown out at second to end the game at 13-2.
The
Camels had better luck against Ivy League opponent Harvard in game
two. Senior Michelle Carey went the distance allowing two runs on
four hits to pick up her third win of the season.
In
the top of the second, senior Shannon O'Bryan reached on an error
and was driven in on a double by senior Lisa Evans. Sophomore Holly
Harris homered, scoring Evans from second. Landry picked up her
third RBI of the day as she brought home freshman Laraine Fraijo
from second base giving CU a 4-0 lead.
Harvard
scored twice to cut the lead to 4-2 in the bottom of the
second.
Campbell
added three insurance runs in the top of the forth as freshman
Kristina Schmallen doubled to score Landry and junior Meredith
Moody. O'Bryan doubled to score Schmallen to give the final 7-2
score.
Tennessee
Tech outlasted the Camels in game three, winning 1-0 in eight
innings.
Using
the International Base Running rule, each team was allowed to place
a runner on second in the eighth inning. In the top of the eighth,
with freshman Erica Willis on second, Schmallen laid down a
sacrifice bunt to move Willis to third. O'Bryan and Evans each
popped out leaving Willis stranded.
Tennessee
Tech bunted Marianne Novac from second to third before Samantha
Lovelady singled to score Novac with the game winning run.
Harris
worked 7-and-1/3 innings, allowing six hits and striking out three.
Lisa Lamb and Tia Brenning worked the shared shut-out with the win
going to Brenning in relief.
Campbell
will return to action Saturday as the squad travels to DeLand,
Fla., taking on A-Sun rival Stetson at 1:00 p.m. The Camels will
return to Buies Creek on April 2 as they host Florida Atlantic at
5:00 p.m. [Game One | Game Two | Game Three]
