Stetson
Sweeps Campbell, 2-1 and 10-2
DeLand,
Fla. -- Stetson softball swept
Campbell, 2-1 and 10-2, in an Atlantic Sun Conference doubleheader
Saturday afternoon to remain a perfect 18-0 at the Stetson Softball
Field.
The
Hatters improve to 24-4 overall and 4-0 in the A-Sun, while the
Camels fall to 15-19 and 3-7 in the league.
With
the game tied 1-1 and two runners on base in the bottom of the
seventh inning, Melissa Wiggins blasted a one-out double to center
field to send home Sherilynn Wilder for the 2-1 Hatter victory.
Emily Harris had used a bunt to move Shawna Wiggs home from third
and tie the game for Stetson.
Campbell
got on board first in the sixth inning on a wild pitch.
In
game two, the Hatters came out swinging, pounding out 10 runs off
nine hits. Stetson jumped ahead early with a Carrie Cruit RBI
single to left field for the 1-0 advantage in the bottom of the
first inning. The Hatters then opened things up in the following
inning with eight runs off five hits. Alison Parker led off with a
bunt single and eventually scored on a wild pitch. Lacey Prince
then used a sacrifice bunt to allow Wilder to cross the plate after
reaching on a double to left field. Holly Burris had an RBI single
to center field to put the Hatters up 5-0. With bases loaded,
pitcher Blake Hoorelbeke powered out a grand slam to put Stetson up
9-0.
In
the bottom of the third, Harris notched a solo homer for her third
home run of the season.
The
Camels managed two runs in the top of the fourth when Kristina
Schmallen reached first base on a single, followed by a Shannon
O'Bryan two-run homer. That marked O'Bryan's 38th career home run
and the ninth of this season, equaling her output from a year
ago.
Hoorelbeke
picked up both wins on the mound for the Hatters to improve to 16-0
for the season. In game one, she allowed just one run off three
hits while striking out five Camels. In game two, she allowed two
runs off four hits. Holly Harris went the distance in game one for
Campbell, striking out three, while allowing five hits and two
runs. In game two, Lexi Myers started the game, but was replaced
by Michelle Carey in the second inning. Myers struggled on the
mound giving up five runs on five hits in just 1-and-1/3 innings.
Carey worked 2-and-2/3 innings, giving up four hits and five runs,
striking out two.
Harris
helped out the Hatters at the plate for the doubleheader, going
3-for-5 with two runs and two RBIs, while Wilder was 3-for-5 with
two runs scored. Hoorelbeke ended up 2-for-5 with four RBIs and one
run.
Campbell
will return to action on Wednesday, April 2 as they host Florida
Atlantic at the Eakes Softball Complex. The first pitch is slated
