Marion Tournament
FLORENCE, S.C.
Jacksonville State survived a one-hole playoff with Southern
Mississippi to claim the team title at the 19th-annual First
Reliance Bank Intercollegiate Golf Tournament, hosted by Francis
Marion University. Tuesday's final round began amid morning
showers, but finished with an exciting playoff under sunny
skies.
Campbell University
finished tied with Old Dominion for ninth place following a
final-round 298 for a plus-27, three-round total of 891 strokes.
Jacksonville State and Southern Miss finished the event at
nine-over 873, one stroke better than South Alabama.
Senior Braxton Wynns
was Campbell's low finisher, placing in a tie for 12th following a
two-over 74 on the final 18 holes.
The 54-hole tournament
was played on the par 72, 7,041-yard Country Club of South Carolina
course.
South Alabama's Gareth
Maybin, a sophomore from Ballydome, Northern Ireland, fired a
final-round, two-under 70 to finish at four-under 212 and edge
Tulane University's Bill Roach Jr. by two strokes.
Maybin became the
second straight tournament medalist from South Alabama, following
Ryan Gildersleeve's win in 2002. Roach, who held the lead after 36
holes, shot a 75 on Tuesday to finish at two-under 214. Brad Quiri
of the University of South Florida carded Tuesday's low round of 68
to finish in third place at one-under 215. Floyd was in a group of
four golfers tied at even-par 216.
Francis Marion, the
defending NCAA Division II national champions, shot a final-round
303 to pass fellow Peach Belt Conference member Georgia College
& State University and finish at 909.
Southern Miss shot the
lowest team score on Tuesday, an even-par 288, to tie the Gamecocks
at nine-over 873 for 54 holes and to force the playoff. The
playoff consisted of each squad's five team members playing the
par-4 18th hole, with the four low scores counting. JSU finished
the hole at one-under-par, while the Golden Eagles finished
three-over.
South Alabama finished
third one stroke back at 874, followed by Charlotte (875), Tulane
(877), South Florida (878), East Carolina University (884), Coastal
Carolina University (889), Old Dominion University and Campbell
University (891), FMU (909), University of Texas-Pan American
(911), Georgia College & State University (915), and Virginia
Commonwealth University (916).
Charlotte led after 18
holes, while JSU owned the 36-hole lead. Tuesday's victory marked
the third time the Gamecocks have captured the tournament title,
previously having won in 1998 and 1999. It was the first team
playoff in the event's history.
Campbell returns to
action next Monday at the University of Denver Intercollegiate
tournament.
